Undoubtably, the BII Venture Lab is an accelerator program in the most literal sense of the word ‘accelerator’, but not only due to academic learnings about e.g., technology and product development – first and foremost through the many learnings from meeting other people. 🌱🚀 4P CAPITAL invests in replacing traditional animal-derived collagen🚀🌱   Cambrium, a Berlin-based synthetic biology startup, and founded by Mitchell Duffy and Charlie Cotton, PhD, alumni from Imperial College London College, has recently completed a substantial seed funding round, securing a total of €8 million in investment.    The round was led by Essential Capital and saw participation from SNR, Valor Equity Partners, HOF Capital, and prior funding from Merantix. This funding round brings the total raised by Cambrium to €11 million, signifying a strong vote of confidence from various investors in the company's mission and potential. 🌱💰   The focus of this funding injection is on scaling Cambrium's innovative approach, particularly in their flagship product, NovaColl. NovaColl represents a breakthrough in synthetic biology as it aims to replace traditional animal-derived collagen.    Collagen, an essential protein found in various products such as skincare, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, has historically been obtained from animal sources, raising ethical and environmental concerns. Cambrium's technology seeks to provide an animal-free alternative, reducing reliance on animal-derived collagen and its associated environmental impact. 🚀🐾   This significant investment round not only demonstrates confidence in Cambrium's innovative vision but also indicates a growing interest and support for sustainable, ethical, and environmentally conscious solutions within the synthetic biology and biotech sectors. Attending #Bio Europe Spring again after some years has been inspiring. As former executive of a #Biotech company who now works as consultant for such companies, I enjoy learning about how much the Biotech environment has changed in #Europe and especially in #Spain. Six Spanish #Venturecapital entities organizing a joint together between companies and investors in globally is something that was a dream when I joined the sector in 2008. All of them are to be mentioned: Caixa Capital Risc, Asabys Partners, Invivo Partners, Ysios Capital, COLUMBUS VENTURE PARTNERS,S.G.E.I.C., S.A.U. and Aliath Bioventures I had the possibility to listen to many intriguing presentations from a wide range of perspectives: my friend Jose Mesa from COLUMBUS VENTURE PARTNERS,Sc.G.E.I.C., S.A.U. talked about their social view translated into the Fundación Columbus for treating children with #rarediseases. Clara Campàs Moya from Asabys Partners explained their investment strategy and how the impact of investments are measured from an #ESG perspective. Laura A. Lane from Eli Lilly and Company provided colour on their three-pilar strategy for investment and Alain Huriez Hureiz from AdBio partners gave his view as a foreign #VentureCapital investing in Spain. Lubor Gaal and Philippe Lopes-Fernandes gave concise advice, stating “Do not do it because of fashion” or “If you want to codevelop with pharma companies, have clear goals for such a cooperation or you will fail.” What does the future of #Biotech hold? I don’t know, but I leave this conference with new ideas and a sense of excitement for what is to come. 

We had a brilliant few days at BIO-EUROPE 2023 in Munich - thank you for all the ideas, discussion and connection. My impressions: 1. (Nearly) everyone is fundraising, and it is extremely challenging. Strategic partnerships are taking longer than ever to come together and VC/PE capital remains guarded, with a few notable exceptions. 2. (1) demands creativity, resourcefulness, focus and a clear sense of prioritisation. Know explicitly who you are, which problem(s) your team is uniquely positioned to solve, and drive. It is often a case of keeping the lights on to let the data and science get to a point where the deals can happen. 3. (2) created an exciting atmosphere in which entrepreneurs, deal-makers and industry are raising the bar higher. Motivating and nurturing teams with strong leadership and culture is critical to maintain momentum in the face of such economic challenge. Remember the end goal we all share: better care for patients. Looking forward to following up with faces old and new. Special appreciation for Neha Pant, PhD, MBA (she/her), for her indomitable energy - it was a joy to finally start discussing Swarm Oncology: a #celltherapy platform for #metastatic #cancer. Hot off the back of CSIRO’s latest SynBio Roadmap, we’re taking a closer look at how Main Sequence’s investment in the space is translating into real-world application. 🧑🔬 We support over a dozen startups deeply rooted in SynBio, who, since 2021, have raised over $100m and created over 130 jobs. This includes the likes of Number 8 bio, creating carbon-neutral food products for agriculture, Nourish Ingredients, building animal-free fats to make plant-based food tastier and Psylo, leveraging inspiration from natural psychedelics to create next-gen therapeutics to treat mental illness. 🐄 🍄 Many of these companies are making their way into our lives in very big ways through partnerships with the likes of lululemon (Samsara Eco), Quicksilver (Uluu) and Norco Co-operative Limited (Eden Brew), translating research into real-world value. We’re proud to play a role in supporting what has the potential to be one of Australia’s major industries and are continuing to invest in and build incredible companies in the space.
