Hot off the back of CSIRO’s latest SynBio Roadmap, we’re taking a closer look at how Main Sequence’s investment in the space is translating into real-world application. 🧑🔬 We support over a dozen startups deeply rooted in SynBio, who, since 2021, have raised over $100m and created over 130 jobs. Four new #startups have been welcomed into #BioCreate, Ontario Genomics’ $11.6-million accelerator program providing financial and business support to biotechnology companies creating game-changing solutions in the health, food and agriculture, and cleantech industries. With support from #GoC investment through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario | Agence fédérale de ..., we’re connecting each highly vetted company with $150,000 in non-repayable funding, 18 months of business mentorship and access to critical infrastructure. This round of recipients are: ▶️ Escarpment Labs is a Guelph-based company that supplies cutting-edge yeast strains to craft brewers to enhance the flavour of their brews and ensure easier fermentation during the beer making process. ▶️ QurCan Therapeutics is a Toronto medical sciences company that has developed technology to boost the effectiveness of cancer-fighting medicines to improve the quality of life for patients.  ▶️ Spectra Plasmonics is based in Kingston, where it is perfecting a helpful tool for the food and beverage industry. The company’s bacteria sensing tests give manufacturers quick and accurate results on the safety of their food. ▶️ Virica Biotech is an Ottawa-based medical sciences company focused on a ground-breaking approach to make cell and gene therapies cheaper and easier to produce so more patients can get access to potentially life-saving treatments. Breaking news from today! Circe Bioscience (Shannon Nangle, Cohort 2021) just announced the licensing of cutting-edge technology from the Wyss Institute at Harvard University. Developed in the lab of Wyss Core Faculty member Pamela Silver, Circe’s unique gas fermentation approach allows engineered microbes to “eat” greenhouse gases, which could dramatically reduce carbon emissions for a range of industries. The team has used their triglycerides to make the world’s first gas fermentation-derived chocolate and is exploring other types of fats, including milkfat and palm oil. The collaboration between Circe Bioscience and the Wyss Institute exemplifies the importance of interdisciplinary partnerships in driving impactful innovation. By leveraging the expertise of both organizations, this initiative has the potential to revolutionize various sectors, from manufacturing to agriculture, by offering greener alternatives and mitigating the impacts of industrial processes on our planet. To date, Circe has raised over $8M with the help of investors including ReGen Ventures, Bee Partners, Ponderosa Ventures, Undeterred Capital, and Elementum Ventures. Amazing event yesterday run by BioIndustry Association (BIA) to present their Deep BioTech report (https://deepbiotech.org/). I may be boring everyone by repeating the same thing over and over, but this report reinforces my view of the power of #SyntheticBiology to redefine core industries and, in the words of BIA’ CEO Steve Bates OBE FMedSci "unlock a healthy bioeconomy by replacing environmentally damaging practices with a more sustainable bio-based ones”. Deep Blue BioTech is on a clear journey to unlock this power in the Beauty & and Wellbeing industry, landing a new generation of bioactives that will not only be sustainable but highly-efficacious for the industry’s core benefits. We’re getting there, faster than you think. 🚀 I loved the panel chaired by Linda Bedenik showing that UK’s intention to become a global leader in Engineering Biology is creating the supporting structure for start-ups like us can hit the ground running. Isabel Webb's assessment of where the key pain points are was spot on and it was nice to hear from Rita Cruz on how players like Ingenza Ltd can help us bridge that gap in preparation for international scale, where the government through arms like the British Patient Capital will speed up growth and scale, right George Mills, CFA? This week, FoodBev had the privilege of attending the opening of BioBetter’s first food-grade pilot facility located in northern Israel. 🍃 Phoebe Fraser & Siân Yates covered this important milestone and discovered inside-out what makes BioBetter™ a super startup. BioBetter’s CEO Amit Yaari detailed just how disruptive this new technology could be: “To illustrate, if cultivated meat were to take just 10% of the global meat market, this would require 17,000 tons of insulin. Earlier in October, cell-based dairy startup BIOMILQ and molecular farming startup Tiamat Sciences Corp. announced a collaboration to develop human prolactin, a key protein to support the growth and productivity of Biomilq’s human mammary epithelial cell system. The first time a cellular agriculture dairy player announced a partnership with a growth factor and protein production partner, the collaboration highlighted that cell-based dairy startups face similar scaling challenges as cell-based meat startups.
