The Reading League, Inc. (TRL) is a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, whose mission is to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction. The Reading League focuses on improving literacy outcomes for ALL students by providing educators and other stakeholders with professional knowledge about the science of reading - a body of knowledge that reveals how to develop skilled reading and writing most effectively.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Marketing Director, the Website Development Manager works cross-functionally with internal stakeholders and executives to promote the science of reading and expand TRL’s reach to more educators, students, and advocates by maintaining and enhancing The Reading League’s websites.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop, maintain, and update The Reading League’s websites on WordPress Multisite and Shopify to ensure a user-friendly experience with optimal page load speed, mobile-friendliness, and navigational structure
Implement new features and troubleshoot bugs to support business objectives
Intake, manage, and fulfill requests from internal stakeholders for new landing pages or updates to existing content
Ensure web pages and web content meet accessibility standards
Optimize website performance, speed, and usability through best practices in web development and SEO
Regularly assess and audit website functionality, identify and fix bugs, and maintain high-quality standards
Employ creative solutions to technical challenges to enhance user experience
Assist TRL’s chapter network by setting up sub-sites for each new chapter and providing a basic level of technical support
Collaborate with the Marketing Director, other internal stakeholders, and executives to manage website content
Utilize tools such as Google Analytics (GA4) and Google Search Console to track and report on website performance and key metrics, providing regular reports and insights to stakeholders to inform and impact strategy adjustments
Oversee and coordinate with outside agencies and contractors for website development projects, ensuring alignment with TRL’s goals, standards, and timelines
Complete additional tasks as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or related field (or equivalent work experience)
Minimum of 5 years of experience in website development, including frontend and backend expertise with WordPress and Shopify
Proven proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP
Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite
Experience with CRM platforms, preferably HubSpot, and familiarity with integrations, APIs, and customization
Strong analytical skills and a deep understanding of Google Analytics (GA4), Google Tag Manager, Google Search Console, and other analytics tools
Strong understanding of web design principles, UX/UI best practices, and SEO principles
Significant knowledge of e-commerce interfaces, experiences, and conventions with a proven track record for increasing customer engagement and growing online revenue
Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively
Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to articulate technical challenges and solutions to a non-technical audience
Strong project management, communication, and collaboration skills
Experience with WordPress Multisite and WooCommerce helpful

Work may be performed remotely
Core working hours are 9am to 5 pm EST, Monday through Friday, with occasional work outside these hours for large updates. Flexible hours are available outside of core working hours.
