Nutrition Educator

Job Summary: The Healthy Schools Healthy Families (HSHF) Nutrition Educator will provide nutrition and physical activity related programming and services to students, parents, families, and staff in Genesee County, using approved nutrition and physical activity curriculum.

Essential Duties (May Include, But Not Limited To)

  • Conducts interactive nutrition and physical activity lessons with SNAP-eligible students before, during and after school, using approved resource materials.
  • Schedules, organizes and prepares nutrition and physical activity lessons which demonstrate making healthy food choices within a limited budget and physically healthy lifestyles, consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA food guidance.
  • Schedules and presents lessons, workshops and training on basic nutrition and physical activity in schools and community settings, such as food pantries.
  • Works collaboratively with education and community partners to identify opportunities and provide support in improving the organization’s policies, systems, and environments in the area of healthy food choices and physical activity.
  • Completes and organizes paperwork and files to meet grant requirements, including evaluation data.
  • Participates in school open houses, health events, community events, and food pantry programs, demonstrating healthy snacks and foods that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA food guidance.
  • Participates in developing and implementing the evaluation of program effectiveness.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities as directed.
  • Collaborates with other staff and participates in staff and program meetings as directed.
  • Consistently models Win-Win leadership.

Other Duties:

  • Performs other related duties in the department as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree required in one of the following disciplines: nutrition, dietetics, health education, health science, public health, education, food service management, or a related field.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years related experience working in one of the above disciplines preferred. Two (2) years’ experience working with school-age students and underserved, or SNAP-eligible families preferred.

Skills/Other

Evidence of strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work as an effective team member. Evidence of experience presenting curriculum to students of all ages (Pre-K – 12 through adults). Experience coordinating programs preferred. Evidence of being self-directed and showing initiative. Strong problem-solving skills to identify needs and develop solutions. Evidence of accurate record keeping, and data collection skills. Ability to utilize district technology and work to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and/or the needs of the district. Ability to fulfill responsibilities in accordance with program goals. Maintains a positive working relationship with parents/guardians, students, staff and community partners. Punctuality and good attendance are requirements for the position. Ability to work a flexible workday and work week to include some evenings and weekends. This will happen somewhat regularly. Represents the district in a professional manner. Demonstrates honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times. Discretion with confidential information. Exercises good judgment and makes decisions in accordance with board policies and established administrative guidelines. Reliable personal transportation to travel to various program sites throughout Genesee County. Demonstrate physical stamina necessary for lifting and moving equipment and materials, repetitive stooping, squatting, bending, lifting, walking, kneeling and reaching while maintaining personal balance and stability.
