Location – USA - Remote

Under the direction of the National Vice President, Child & Club Safety, the National Director Child & Club Safety provides leadership and guidance to the Directors of Child & Club Safety, field facing staff, local Organizations, and the others through expert-level recommendations, training, consultations, and advocacy to support safety needs.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervision

  • Supervise and provide guidance to regional Directors of Child & Club Safety to ensure the Movement is provided with timely and relevant safety recommendations and assistance.
  • Lead the regional outreach strategy to ensure Organizations receive consultative support on critical safety needs, including critical incident response.

Training, Resources, and Consultation

  • Identify and assess risks/issues at local Clubs and proactively address with Club leadership and relevant Directors of Organizational Development.
  • Advise local organizations on risk management, insurance practice, premise security, transportation safety, internet safety, background checks, incident management systems and other related systems and issues.
  • Assist local safety committees to effectively manage risks and continuously improve safety processes.
  • Develop and deliver safety-related trainings, virtually and in-person, for local Clubs at conferences and state events on best practices and strategies related to child protection.

Crisis Management

  • Lead the response to critical incidents, guide Clubs through times of crisis, and provide timely recommendations and support during and after incidents.
  • Monitor the incident management system, analyze data, and recommend actions to local Clubs and BGCA staff who are responsible for bringing about resolution.
  • Monitor best practices and standards of care utilized by local Clubs, youth serving organizations and other relevant agencies.

Advocacy

  • Support the Movement's advocacy platform relating to child safety through speaking engagements and participation in external events and activities on an as needed basis.
  • Support the planning and implementation of Child & Clubs safety events and activities.

Compliance

  • Provide on-site and virtual technical assistance to help ensure local Clubs comply with BGCA membership requirements and relevant federal, state or local laws and regulations.
  • Strongly influence Clubs to implement best practices in child protection.

Partnerships

  • Provide suggestions regarding potential vendors and partners for background checks, insurance providers, incident management systems, external safety hotlines, internet safety, safety training programs, and other relevant safety programs and services.
  • Benchmark with local Clubs, youth serving organizations and other groups to identify best practices and standards that inform BGCA's overall child safety model.
  • Support the integration of child protection/safety practices throughout the Movement, collaborating closely with the Programs, Operations, Leadership, and Development (POLD) team.
  • Regularly communicate safety messages to the Movement through newsletters, email, trainings, and other outlets as needed.

Additional Responsibilites

  • Manage, coordinate or otherwise ensure the completion of projects or grants that address child and Club safety issues.
  • Demonstrate BGCA mission driven ICARE values, and integrate these beliefs into our environment and ways of work.
  • Adhere to organizational policies and procedures as described in BGCA's Employee Handbook, Ethics Policy and elsewhere.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • Supervise and direct Child & Club Safety Team.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor degree in risk management, youth development, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years related professional experience.

Skills

  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to stay calm and react in times of crisis. Strong presentation skills with the ability to deliver effective training programs and safety related resources. Ability to negotiate with partners for Movement-wide resources and services. Demonstrated high standards of ethics and integrity. Excellent skills in monitoring, follow-up, and great attention to detail. Ability to collect, analyze data, and make decisions based on information. Demonstrates passion for child safety issues. Ability to be flexible and handle multiple tasks and projects at the same time; adjusts priorities based on need. Ability to work interdepartmentally to get results. Ability to influence others to make needed changes without having authority to mandate change. Ability to think conceptually and develop innovative solutions. Expert knowledge of risk management and control, premise liability, security, property hazards, sports and aquatic safety, emergency response planning/procedures, vehicular safety, bullying, and/or child abuse. Ability to effectively use technology while traveling.

ENVIRONMENTAL & WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental and Working Conditions

  • Normal internal office environment. Travel estimated at 60-70% (can be 12 to 14 days or more in a month – overnight and weekends - depending on scheduling requirements). The individual selected for this position must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be able to navigate areas of the country by using a map or other direction methods. Ability to travel by air, car, train, or other modes of transportation.

Physical And Mental Requirements

  • Physical requirements include sight, hearing, sitting for four plus hours per day. High energy level, comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities. Ability to get along with diverse personalities, at all times displaying tact, maturity and flexibility. Must have good reasoning abilities and sound judgment; skills essential for successful communications include speaking and writing.
