Middle School Librarian

Sidwell Friends School, a co-educational Quaker day school, seeks an experienced Middle School Librarian who genuinely appreciates and actively supports the Quaker philosophy that underlies our school for SY 2024-2025. This full-time benefits-eligible position is based in Washington, DC, near the Tenlleytown Metro Station and begins in September 2024.

Reporting to the Middle School Principal, the Librarian will manage the daily operations of its Middle School (grades 5-8) library. The Librarian collaborates with teachers to integrate information literacy skills into the curriculum; oversees circulation and reference services, cataloging, subscriptions, and student behavior; curate and preserve the library as a productive and welcoming space; teach regular classes to 5th and 6th graders; support faculty with various academic projects, with particular focus on research skills; work with faculty, students and other members of the Information Services team daily to support the development of traditional and digital literacy; attend appropriate meetings; serve on committees; and participating in the student life of the school. The omission of specific responsibilities does not preclude duties logically related to the position from being assigned.

Qualifications

  • MLS or equivalent.
  • Three years of experience as a school librarian is strongly preferred.
  • Experience as a teaching librarian at the middle school level is also strongly preferred.
  • Excellent skills with professional and academic digital tools such as library automation systems, learning management systems, online research tools, and digital creation devices.
  • Demonstrate a warm and approachable demeanor.
  • Ability to communicate and actualize a vision of what information services and literacy mean in the 21st century.
  • Active CPR certification or can quickly obtain one by the start date.

Salary

  • Salary Range $68,000-$92,000. Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications.
