Exhibit Development Internship

FSLA: Non-Exempt, Hourly - 80 total hours; $10.00/hour

Department: Exhibits

Reports to: Exhibits Specialist

Occupational Summary

The Creative Discovery Museum is seeking an Exhibit Development Intern to support the Exhibits Department in the development of the temporary fall and winter exhibits. The Exhibits Intern will gain experience in designing and building exhibit components, laying out exhibit displays, writing and editing exhibit labels and signage, learn new methods and materials for creating props and 3D artworks, and have a chance to do creative problem-solving. This position will use various skills and creativity to build props from different materials, including cardboard, paper, wood, and foam.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Exhibits Specialist and Exhibits Props and Special Project Coordinator, the Exhibit Development Intern will:

  • Gather and prep material for Fall and Winter exhibits
  • Organize cardboard and other stored materials to improve workflow
  • Organize and tidy work areas, and facilitate the recycling of cardboard scraps
  • Participate in building large-scale items for exhibits
  • Independently fabricate prop pieces following a set of instructions
  • Research materials or methods of fabrication as a part of the design process
  • Create prop pieces using cardboard sculpting or other appropriate methods of fabrication
  • Assist with signage development for temporary exhibits
  • Assist with putting objects in casework

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

  • Strong time management and ability to self-start
  • Strong communication skills, including knowing when to ask for clarification
  • Ability to both follow instructions and complete self-guided tasks
  • Knowledge or willingness to learn basic power tools such as a drill, jig saw, and scroll saw under appropriate supervision
  • Willingness to learn basic concept drawings, or communication of ideas for designs
  • Artistic nature, considers self to be an artist, craftsperson, or maker of some sort is a plus
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office, including Word, Powerpoint, and Outlook

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma and some college
  • Experience with basic power tools and safety procedures preferred

Working Conditions

  • Museum floor and workshop
  • Some office and computer work
  • Some weekend and evening work required.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Most hours will be active.
  • May require long periods of standing.
  • May require working on the ground or in uncomfortable positions
  • Repetitive motions
