Today, I want to talk about the importance of diversifying your risks. Just yesterday, I had three calls: two were quite positive, and one was quite bad. The first positive call was good for me as an agency. I have a client who decided to work with a freelancer from Poland. Initially, the freelancer worked well but then simply disappeared. There were always excuses, like, "Hey, there's a problem with my mom," or "Hey, I'm on vacation," etc. My client showed me their chat, which was full of smiley faces from the developer, but there was no attitude to fix the issues or complete the job he started. Now, the client is in a situation where he spent a lot of time and a bit of money, but the job is still not done. The second positive call was about a stable company with $3 million in annual revenue. They hired a developer who was working well until the company decided to migrate to another platform. When they informed the developer that he would no longer be needed in a few months, he completely lost interest in the company. He started searching for a new opportunity, leaving them in a situation where they couldn't do anything with their site for a couple of months. Even the current site required updates. The bad call directly affected my company. Mercury, a U.S. financial organization we used for online banking, suddenly sent a message that our account would be closed. This obviously affected our operations and the way I can pay my employees. So, diversifying risk—having an extra developer, a partner you can rely on in an emergency, or an extra bank account—is just a requirement nowadays. Please, always be ready. Don't take unnecessary risks. Being protected now does not mean you will be protected tomorrow.

💫On May 8, the 3rd Invest Meetup organized by iPlan.ua took place in Krakow. 🤝 Krakow Invest Meetup is a community of investors who gather not only to listen to speakers, but also to share their own experience. This is always a lot of important information, a community of like-minded people, representatives of successful companies and experts in the field of investments, networking. 💰 Our colleague Elina Kupina took part in the event and talked about mutual investment funds in Poland (TFI). 🥜 In nutshell, such an investment is safe, because it is regulated by law and state authorities. It is a good option for: - beginner investors (with small capital) - conservative and passive investors 🔺 For active and aggressive strategies it is better to open a brokerage account and buy shares of individual companies or cheap ETFs. Advantages of mutual funds compared to ETFs are the following: ✅ no need to open a brokerage account ✅ no commission for the purchase and transfer of funds ✅ low entrance threshold (100-200 PLN) ✅ tax benefits Disadvantages of Polish mutual funds are: 🔴 higher commission for asset management (in ETFs 0.1-0.2%, in mutual funds - from 0.5%) 🔴 only accumulative strategies (dividends are reinvested, not destributed) 🔴 a smaller variety of investment instruments (there are no funds that buy gold, real estate or cryptocurrencies. 🎤 I'm finally back from Devoxx Poland 2024, and I have to say, I enjoyed the whole conference. On the first day, I gave a talk that was outside my usual tech topics like Java, Testing, Architecture, and Domain-Driven Design. This time, on the biggest stage yet, I talked about being productive at the intersection of development, communication, and business. My talk, "7+ Painful and Funny Tech Lead's Stories to Level Up Your Productivity" 📈 was a very personal one. I shared my pain, some tears, and experiences from 17 years in the industry. I was unsure about the reception, but I was relieved to see many people relate to my stories (even more than I anticipated). I got positive feedback from many people, so I may be speaking on a similar subject in the future. Those productivity tips could save a lot of time for many people in the tricky world of software development. A few words about the conference organization: it was top-notch! The venue was fantastic, with lots of space and a beautiful view of the Wawel Castle 🏰. The lunch was delicious on all three days (though I'd love to see a conference in the future where there are as many veggies and healthy food as cookies and donuts! 🥗). I also appreciated the reusable badges - great for the environment, though it meant needing to ask people for their names. There were five conference tracks and some workshops, and I was happy with the presentations I attended. I wish I could have seen them all, but I'll catch up on the ones I missed when they're released.
