A recent study by Ampere Analysis showed that the arrival of HBO Original “Sex and the City” on Netflix demonstrates the continuing merits of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) and Netflix’s co-exclusive licensing deal. As of April 1, all six seasons of “Sex and the City” have been available to stream for US Netflix subscribers. The show entered Netflix’s US Daily Top 10 TV Shows chart on April 2 at #7 and peaked at #3 the following day. “Sex and the City” follows other hit shows included in the WBD-Netflix deal; all but one of the HBO Originals added to Netflix’s catalog in 2023 made an appearance on Netflix’s Daily Top 10 charts, with the only one that didn’t (“Six Feet Under”) still among the top 20 most popular US TV shows on Netflix in November, according to Ampere’s proprietary popularity metric. https://lnkd.in/dzEkppCR

Post Two in my series explaining who's who on a film shoot, and ever wonder who oversees the entire production process? Meet the Executive Producer. The Executive Producer, or EP, is more senior than a Producer and is the person behind the scenes ensuring a film gets made on time, on budget, and at the highest quality. Here’s what they do: 1️⃣ Secure Funding The EP’s first mission is often to find the money. Whether it’s from studios, investors, or brands, they make sure the project has the financial backing it needs to get off the ground. 2️⃣ Assemble the Team The EP hires the director, key crew members, and often the main cast. They bring together the right mix of talent to make the film or video shine. 3️⃣ Manage the Budget Once the money is secured, the EP keeps a close eye on the budget. They ensure that every penny is spent wisely and that there are no nasty financial surprises during the production. 4️⃣ Creative Oversight While they might not be involved in the day-to-day creative decisions, EPs have the final say on major creative aspects. They're there to ensure the film stays true to its vision and appeals to its target audience. 5️⃣ Problem Solver in Chief Every production hits a snag or two. The EP is the go-to person for solving problems, smoothing over conflicts, and keeping everything on track. 6️⃣ Marketing and Distribution After the film is made, the EP often plays a role in its marketing and distribution. They work to get the film seen by as many people as possible. Of course, roles and responsibilities can vary due to the type of project. In short though, the Executive Producer is the glue that holds the entire production together. They make tough decisions, manage finances, and ensure the project stays on course. You could be releasing your film with a better distribution model You have direct access to the largest audience base in the WORLD and its FREE. Evan Shapīro shared an incredible post on the total viewing of YouTube compared to "traditional" broadcasters & streamers. (the graph below comes from his post, made by him) The stats are astounding. Though Evan's post primarily looks at television, the same concepts can be applied to films. The always insightful Jo Redfern also commented on Evan's post and I had to share it here: "investors really need to consider the vast talent looking to build new animated series, features and games FOR the social first generation to go ON social first and build from there. Many new IP being left unmade." As an indie filmmaker or creator, social should be your first strategy. Get on YouTube first. Grow your audience there. Build demand for your IP, stories, and creative style in real time. Not only do you have the incredible power to building an audience on YT, you are also creating a brand for yourself as the style of filmmaker you are. And you can earn a revenue straight from YouTube. Six months prior to releasing your film or pilot, you should build out your YouTube channel with behind the scenes, making of, interviews, and even vlogging the process. If you already have that content, publish on TikTok and link back to your YouTube channel. So that when you launch your film, you have built out your audience and you can have your channel monetized - to begin to earn revenue. You can spend years knocking on the doors of investors, production companies, and studios. Or you could create and share, build your audience and have those same people come knocking for you. YouTube knows where they stand in the TV market so you can bet they are strategizing how to make that more enjoyable for audiences, and you can for sure bet they will do the same for films.

‘There's no money in the market’: Film Backending Vs Publishing Royalties 📌The publishing industry is known to tie overall compensation to royalties. Royalties are essentially back-ended payments, pegging success on sale of the product. All authors get an advance, of course, but the major money is the cut taken from how well the book does. In the film industry, this translates to back-ended payment. In the film industry, conversation around backending is exploding, as star costs have started to explode. 📌This is relevant because the most common refrain everyone is hearing today in the Indian film industry is that there’s no money in the market. An article in The Indian Express shed light on how the Hindi film industry is bleeding out, as star + entourage costs skyrocket. To compensate, the budget cuts have to happen somewhere, and they are happening with the writers, editors, the secondary actors, and even to the producers themselves. So even though last year was good for the box office, the overall costs still haemorrhage the industry. 📌The problem that the film industry – streaming and OTT - is struggling with is the idea of Equal Pay for Unequal Success. The streaming model of compensation meant that creators involved in highly successful streaming shows or movies were paid the same as those involved in less successful ones.  This essentially devalued quality and success because everyone was paid equally regardless of how well their work performed.  It was in response to this that writers, historically underpaid and invisible, launched the Writer's strike and fought for a compensation structure that included bonuses based on a show/movie's success, which would also result in transparency in viewership data. Who is watching what + what is the completion rate? And if you cast actors basis their box office draw, shouldn’t their compensation be linked to the box office collection? Aamir Khan said it himself on a Koffee with Karan episode. 📌This seems to be the thinking. Creative structures and deals funnelling compensation into success are being looked at.  According to a Bloomberg Report, Apple has met with talent reps to propose a deal that would pay creators based on performance, no longer paying a premium upfront to buy out backend earnings. The memo suggests creators would get bonuses based on how many people sign up for Apple to watch the program, the amount of time people spend watching it, and how much your program costs relative to how many people watch it. The creatives behind 3 best-performing shows could make as much as $10.5 million for a single season. 📌Clearly, a big name doesn’t matter anymore. But that is where a significant fraction of the production costs is also being incurred. So, in the backend, it should be essential to also account for the prominence of the star cast.
