Artist Tina Williams Brewer and a group of Wilkinsburg residents are working on a history project. Instead of writing a book or mounting a museum exhibition, their undertaking involves piecing together a community quilt. The Wilkinsburg Untold Stories project combines old-fashioned craft, oral history and high-tech to tell stories about the Black experience in the Pittsburgh suburb, one 16-by-16-inch quilt square at a time. Brewer, a teaching artist for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, describes herself as a “diasporic storyteller.” She recently received $50,000 as The Pittsburgh Foundation’s Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement Award winner in the Established Artist category.

"More than 1.2 million children in Pennsylvania will qualify for the aid, state officials said. Also known as Summer EBT, the benefits of $120 per child will be transmitted electronically via a debit card, similar to the SNAP program, which is sometimes called food stamps...Most households that are eligible for the program will be enrolled automatically and will not have to do anything to apply. Families who are eligible already receive a benefit such as SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or Medicaid, or if they applied for and were eligible for free or reduced-price school meals." - 90.5 WESA Learn more and take advantage of this important program.

The Small and Mighty grants program, an initiative of our Foundation that aims to increase support for small, community-based nonprofits, has awarded grants totaling $480,000 to 12 organizations, including seven first-time SAM grantees. The Small and Mighty program was created to support nonprofits with budgets of $600,000 or less and, with this cycle of grantmaking, has granted $3.3 million since its inception in 2016. Our Foundation is an advocate and convener in Harrisburg around the Pennsylvania Housing Affordability and Rehabilitation Enhancement Fund (PHARE). PHARE provides grants to municipalities to build and repair homes and provide rental assistance to low-income families, among other things. The proposal has already seen broad bipartisan support. "Fiber artist Tina Williams Brewer and theater artist Adil Mansoor are this year’s winners of the Carol R. Brown Creative Achievement awards for Pittsburgh-based artists. The winners were selected after a process that produced 225 nominations for 70 different artists from a panel of working artists and cultural professionals.
