While much of the country is focused on the impact of Hurricane Beryl, members of our Type 3 Incident Management Team just touched down in Vale, Oregon, to assist with their Emergency Operations Center amidst raging wildfires there. Excessive heat and drought across the western states have caused fires to expand rapidly. From wildfire mitigation to supporting the response, we serve those communities at risk and are always ready to respond. Team Rubicon Look Back Pt. 7: Operation Rock Steady, July 2014 When a torrential storm blew through Rock Rapids, Iowa, causing the Rock River to crest at 25 feet, Team Rubicon quickly deployed a team of 13 #Greyshirts to help with debris management and flood damage. In just a week, Team Rubicon volunteers completed 14 work orders, delivering over $25,000 in labor to the community’s rehabilitation efforts Team Rubicon's commitment to serving communities in need, wherever they are, is only possible because of the commitment of its partners and volunteers. Hurricane Beryl marks an unprecedented beginning to this year’s Atlantic hurricane season as both the earliest Category 4 and Category 5 hurricane on record. The storm has already devastated communities across the Caribbean, especially St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica, and made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula near Cancun yesterday. Team Rubicon’s International Team is working to partner with local communities that may need our help. Meanwhile, the anticipated path of Hurricane Beryl has shifted northwest toward Texas and is expected to make landfall by the end of the weekend. There is an increased risk of hurricane force winds and life-threatening storm surge in portions of northeastern Mexico and the Texas Coast late Sunday into Monday. Heavy rainfall with potential flooding and possible damaging winds are expected in the Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas beginning late Sunday through the midweek. There is also a threat of life-threatening rip currents throughout the weekend across the Texas Gulf Coast. Team Rubicon’s domestic teams are preparing for landfall, with more than 16,000 local Texan Greyshirts standing by to help their neighbors. Do you want to explore a possible career in the skilled trades sector? This July, Team Rubicon is working with the GAF Roofing Academy to offer free training on residential roofing in the Tampa, FL area. Graduates of the program will have the opportunity to interview with GAF's certified contractors and local employers for immediate hire into the roofing industry. Why Roofing as a Career? A solid, durable roof can protect homes, save money on repairs, and even prevent deaths when a disaster hits. But Team Rubicon’s mission to help communities before, during, and after disasters is hindered by our nation’s recent lack of skilled contractors. The Associated General Contractors of America reported that 77% of their respondents are struggling to fill craftworker positions, and 20% said hiring will get harder through the rest of 2024 and into 2025. The main reason is: not enough workers or subcontractors are available. The Time is Now! The NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration forecasts a very active hurricane season with about 25 storms and 12 hurricanes, six expected to be Category 3 or higher. To help more people get trained in the trades and make more homes prepared for storms, we’re working with leading organizations like the GAF Roofing Academy. They have a proven curriculum and training program that combines realistic lessons from the GAF Roofing Academy with hands-on exercises.
