Meet Heidi Spielmaker (She/Her), one of our LGBTQ+ Members: "I have encouraged all persons no matter how they identify, to become involved in fighting for human rights. I have been involved with the HRC Human Rights Campaign for the past 18 years and I feel especially connected. I did what I could with them while they led the fight for same sex marriage! I reaped the rewards of that fight, when I married my then "domestic partner" Terry, of 8 years. We will celebrate 10 years of "legal" marriage this November! I am happy to have the opportunity to serve on the Tapestry queer committee and look forward to continuing discussions on how best to serve our LGBTQ+ patients and their communities." The word of the day is UNITY! Last night we closed out our Juneteenth festivities with an intimate mixer for Tapestry 360 Health staff. Thank you to Sip and Savor Chicago and Turner Haus Brewery for hosting us and to Kats Kitchen for the delicious dinner! The menu consisted of greens, sweet potatoes, baked macaroni and cheese, chicken, corn bread and a banana pudding for dessert. Meet Anne Tarricone, LSW, CN-BM (She/Her), one of our LGBTQ+ Members: "I think every queer person has had at least one (but often more) negative experience receiving healthcare. From being subjected to prejudice to having assumptions made about our health, it discourages queer people from seeking primary care. A committee like this is needed in all healthcare spaces to create a safe and supportive environment for queer patients and employees. The importance of LGBTQ+ inclusivity and representation goes beyond the interaction between a provider and a patient. It starts when a patient is making the appointment, to checking into their appointment, to the data embedded in their medical records. Medical records, data, and research has historically only considered cisgender and heterosexual people and has never been “neutral”. An equitable approach to support the LGBTQ+ community is to give us power in decision making in all aspects of healthcare, including tech and research. As the cancer prevention manager, I create resources with gender neutral language since, for example, not all people who need mammograms or pap smears identify as women." Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, resilience, and the incredible contributions of Black Americans to our society. To mark this important occasion, we gave away 40 tickets to attend the inspiring DuSable Black History Museum of Education Center! This fun organizational field trip was brought to our staff by our READI Committee. (Racial Equity, Access, Diversity and Inclusion) The day was filled with fun indoors and outdoors from educational exhibits, delicious food and music to various black owned businesses. As an organization we nurture diversity, innovation and an inclusive culture. We are committed to strengthening our connection to the communities and patients we serve and hosting moments like this for our staff allows us to continue that mission.
