Black History Month is an important time to celebrate, highlight, and reflect upon the deep contributions of Black and African American people in the U.S. We’d like to highlight the importance of black well-being. There are a number of unique factors that affect the well-being of people within the black community. Our Health and Life Coaches are equipped to support the well-being needs of this community. They focus on the individual while recognizing the community aspects that may play a role in their overall well-being. We interviewed our Founder & CEO Meigan Ward, who is a studying International Psychologist and Health and Life Coach. She shared her insights on the topic - based on her lived experiences and empirical research on mental health and the black community. During the interview we asked, what advice do you have for people in the Black community who may be dealing with burnout due to paying the Black Tax or working harder for less, all in the spirit of Black Excellence? Her advice ✨ “Be careful in the demand for Black Excellence. It can promote Black exceptionalism which can harm the well-being of Black people. That is because exceptionalism can create an unforgiving level of performance expectations in various aspects of one’s life. 🌟 Black History Month invites us to embrace not only the extraordinary achievements of notable Black figures but also to recognize and celebrate the everyday lives and contributions of Black individuals. It’s a time to reflect on the societal expectations placed on people of color—that to be acknowledged, one must be exceptional in some way. This month, let’s challenge that narrative and affirm that being oneself, in all aspects of life, is inherently valuable and worthy of celebration. Notable figures like Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and James Baldwin have left indelible marks on our history and culture. However, the strength and essence of the Black community also lie in its teachers, nurses, artists, parents, and all those who contribute to the richness of our shared society by simply being themselves. As we engage in Black History Month, let’s commit to recognizing and valuing the diverse contributions of the Black community, not as exceptions but as integral parts of the tapestry of our collective history. It’s an opportunity to affirm that excellence comes in countless forms and that every individual, regardless of their background, enriches our community simply by being part of it. As we recognize and celebrate Black History Month throughout the month of February, we must remember that Black History is American History, and we must study and remember it always. There are many things we can do as a collective to ensure we’re bringing awareness, love, and light to the black community. Make it a personal goal to: • Use your platform to educate about black history, justice, and equality. • Follow up on the commitments and promises you made during the BLM protests. • Share a post from a black business owner in your community. • Support, shop, and recommend black businesses in your area. • Collaborate and work together with black businesses where you can. Let’s work together to be the change we want to see in our world.
