Should we separate the Siamese Twins? - and why should we separate #EBOM and #MBOM? 🤔🤷♂️ Do you still remember? Until a few years ago, we advocated the one-fits-all structure concept. We told everyone that one structure was enough and made everything easier. 📏✨ There are still a few proponents of this approach - but there are fewer and fewer of them. 📉 It is now a matter of course that we separate EBOM and MBOM. But is this even necessary and if so, where does it come from? 🤔🔍 After many discussions in consulting situations and the analysis of many cases, I think that the main driver is modularization and the associated idea of selling additional functions. 💡💬 Think of a machine tool. Here you can now buy, for example, tool breakage monitoring or automatic preselection of tools. 🛠️🔧 Both are functions. The components that contribute to the fulfillment of the function cannot be built in this way. Nevertheless, it is necessary to create an assembly for them. Why is this necessary? There are two main reasons for this: -The developer of the function wants to have his parts quickly accessible. -The function must be saleable. According to #ERP logic, this must then appear in the order as an order line. 💼📋 This means that #modularization and the sale of functions put a lot of pressure on the BOM to develop its semantics towards a functional orientation. 💼➡️🔧 However, this put pressure on production, as assembly and, above all, the timely provision of parts cannot be planned with a function-oriented BOM. 🏭🕒 As you can see, we are already in the process of having to separate the Siamese twins. ✂️🤔 What do you think? 🤷♂️ The deeper we at STZ-RIM Reshape Information Management delve into this topic, the more we recognize new aspects and challenges. 🚀 Why doesn't anyone know that? - PLM & ERP Insights - for Experts only 🧠 When we talk about major IT systems such as #ERP, #PLM, #MOM, #CPQ, #CRM etc., there is a blind spot. A level of information architecture that we use in language that we are not aware of. It is interesting to note, for example, that frameworks such as #TOGAF also have a blind spot at this point. Martin Eigner and I have already pointed this out in the post "We finally solved PLM & ERP". Here are more details. I/we are convinced that the action takes place on a level we have been using for a long time but have not sufficiently scientifically understood. Look at the post picture. There is the concrete, real world in which things are tangible. This includes, for example, a real machine tool and an already implemented PLM or ERP system, whether cloud or on-prem. In order to be able to talk about it, we use language, images and our thinking power. This shifts us to an abstract level. When the data models of PLM and ERP systems, for example, were designed and implemented, this also happened. The result was very different domain-specific data models that can already be implemented in many IT systems in the real world today. The objects in the respective data models have different levels of abstraction. This means that completely different aspects of the real world were extracted and condensed from different perspectives (domain-specific). In the picture, we see a machine tool that is represented in ERP and PLM at different levels of abstraction and for different purposes (capacity carrier/cost causer vs. object for geometric simulation). Now comes a crucial point. Today, these systems are often implemented in the real world. Through customizing and adaptation, the application and thus the meaning of its abstract entities has moved away from the original intention in the data models. This has created/is creating a new reality every day, which needs to be abstracted again. We from STZ-RIM Reshape Information Management have created new methods with which this can be done precisely. Possibly they will be able to even laying the foundation for a new scientific approach. Sounds complicated - and it is 😊. Only for now, until we have outlined them sufficiently. In the field, you probably don't think about it much. You notice it, for example, when you want to bring ERP and PLM together and the mapping of the data models in the application does not work. 🚀 Scaling of SÜSS MicroTec without loosing our genes - our customer centricity? We transform from Engineering-to-Order (ETO) to Configure-to-Order+ (CTO+). Configure-to-order requires a dedicaded modular product platform to offer a wide range of solutions to our customers. The "plus" in CTO+ is the capeablity allowing specials within our modules. To ensure the efficient and effective handling within the operational parts of SÜSS MicroTec, engineering and producion is working together with Prof. Dr. Jörg W. Fischer and his team from STZ-RIM Reshape Information Management to optimize BOM-handling and PLM and ERP tools. These guys really do know what they talking about! Visiting the shopfloor and deep diving into our ERP is necessary to find the best CTO+ solution SÜSS MicroTec. I am learing so - thank you for supporting our transformation.

Last week we finally solved PLM & ERP! 🎉 Those who know Martin Eigner and me personally know that we are never shy about using big words 😉. Now, can PLM & ERP even be solved? We believe, however, that we have come significantly closer to the solution. Here is my thought pattern on this: What we repeatedly notice in industry discussions is the enormous increase in the complexity of discussions around digitalization, PLM, ERP, CPQ… 🤯 We are experiencing a level of complexity that companies can hardly manage anymore. Humanity has repeatedly proven that it can solve complex problems when they are described precisely and made teachable and understandable. This is a task for science, i.e., for professors. In this case, not for classical research science, but for applied science in the transfer to industry. Interestingly, the approaches we need to use are derived more from the humanities, i.e., specifically from the science of logic according to Hegel, rather than from precise sciences like engineering. 🧠🔍 It is about defining a level of language in a suitable level of abstraction that allows a uniform, neutral (i.e., IT-system-neutral) discussion of the issues. Since this does not exist today, it is impossible to create precise maps of what is. One could say that we are in business science, in PLM and ERP, in a time like Columbus, when no map of the world existed, and it was not certain whether one would fall off the edge of the world. 🌍🗺️ In short: We are convinced that we have found a fundamental methodology on whose basis a complete and consistent mapping system for companies can emerge, from strategy development to implementation. If we have succeeded - and we are very confident - then I think we can claim that we have solved PLM & ERP. At least in part 😊 What do you think? Do you have your North Star for #Digitalization🌟? How precise and actionable is it? Do you know exactly where you stand today?
