I am proud to share Google's 2024 Environmental Report, which highlights our commitment to sustainability and the strategic use of AI to drive climate action. This year’s report showcases significant advancements and acknowledges the important and challenging work ahead. Key highlights include: -AI for Sustainability: We've optimized energy use, predicted extreme weather, and enabled carbon reductions. Our AI-powered fuel-efficient routing has enabled 2.9 million metric tons of GHG emissions reductions, equivalent to removing 650,000 cars from the road. -Clean Energy Initiatives: We’ve achieved at least 90% carbon-free energy in 10 grid regions and maintained a global average of 64% carbon-free energy despite our increased electricity load. We also contracted 4 GW of clean energy generation capacity, more than in any prior year. -Water Stewardship: We've nearly doubled our water replenishment portfolio and replenished an estimated 1 billion gallons of water, tripling our progress toward our water replenishment goal. -Circular Economy: We achieved 100% plastic-free packaging for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable product design. Our journey toward a sustainable future is driven by innovation and collaboration. #GoogleCloud #CarbonFootprint Today, I'm excited to share some of our latest research: Carbon accounting in the Cloud, a methodology for allocating emissions across data center users. At Google Cloud, we're not just focused on performance and innovation – we're also committed to driving sustainability in the #cloudcomputing space. Our team continues to evolve the methodology that provides the backing for Google's 'Cloud Carbon Reporting' tools. Key highlights from our research: ▪️Accurate accounting methods for allocating energy consumption are vital for multi-user environments. ▪️Increased use of physical allocation (recommended by Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and location-specific carbon intensity factors. ▪️Energy Efficiency best practices have already led to significant emissions reductions across #datacenters. ▪️Carbon-free energy is a game-changer, and research demonstrates the immense impact of combining energy efficiency with #cleanenergy. Looking Ahead: We're committed to helping customers optimize electricity consumption and lower carbon emissions. In the future, we'll be extending use of physical allocation data and including market-based emissions standards to drive carbon reduction and reporting efforts. I’m delighted that Google won a Bronze Award for Environmental Innovation Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity for our work on contrails reduction ✈ The award recognises all the work our teams and partners have put into this project. Contrails — the thin, white lines behind airplanes — form when planes fly through layers of humidity, and can persist as cirrus clouds for minutes or hours. This traps large amounts of heat that would otherwise leave the atmosphere, creating a net warming effect. Together with American Airlines and Breakthrough Energy , we brought together huge amounts of data and used #AI to develop contrail forecast maps to test if pilots can choose routes that avoid creating them in the first place. A new study by the National Bureau of Economic Research has assessed the economic impact of #climatechange. Key points: 🌡 A 1-degree Celsius increase in global temperature is estimated to lead to a 12% decline in world GDP. 🏷 The social cost of carbon is calculated at $1,056 per ton of CO2. 🔽 If current business activities continue as usual, the present value of welfare is projected to decline by 31%. The voluntary carbon market and high-integrity removal credits are absolutely necessary tools to prevent these scenarios. We’re channeling finance towards restoration, resilience, and adaptation while helping companies meet their sustainability goals for hard-to-abate sectors.
