Research shows that parents’ involvement in their kid’s learning is the strongest predictor of academic success. When schools, teachers, and parents come together to form a team, kids benefit. But how can we get started? Use these three ideas to engage families as partners in teaching and learning. ⤵️ 1️⃣ Empower families to embrace their expertise. Families can be their children’s first and most important teachers. They tend to know their kids best and can have valuable insight to share. Help families realize this by disrupting the idea that educators are the only “experts” that need to be listened to. Families come with their own expertise about their children and how they best learn. 2️⃣ Listen to families. Encourage families to keep sharing what is working— and not working— at home. When you invite families to share how learning is going, truly listen to them. Come to conversations with a series of open-ended questions that you can ask. If you’d like to engage families as partners in their children’s reading development, ask questions such as: Is your family able to make time for at-home reading time?; What is working? What would make it easier for you?; Where could you use more support or guidance? Cultivate patience, curiosity, and compassion. Do not try to direct the conversation or answer parents’ requests immediately. Instead, allow yourself time to truly listen. Dedicate time to reflect— ideally with colleagues— on what you heard families say, then make a plan for moving forward. 3️⃣ Foster collaboration. To truly support students, we need to create a culture that invites parents’ voices and incorporates structured approaches that bring families and schools together. Work together with families to get clear on where their child is at academically and set goals for improvement. Create a plan together to support these goals both inside and outside of school. By keeping the lines of communication open, you can create consistency with the language and approaches being used at home and school. Working towards common goals creates a seamless support system for students. #StudentSuccess #Education #Educators

We close the literacy gap by closing the gap between home and school.📚 Ring the bell for the latest literacy research.
About us
Children spend 75% of their waking hours outside of the classroom, yet our nation does shockingly little to capture educational value from this time for low-income kids. Our program coaches educators and family members to help kids learn to read on grade level by 4th grade. Springboard Collaborative envisions a world where all children have the requisite literacy skills to access life opportunities. Nationally, we are the only organization to have cracked the code on equipping marginalized families to teach reading at home. At Springboard Collaborative, family-educator collaboration is the most joyful, culturally affirming, and cost-effective way to give kids access to high-quality instructional time. Our recipe for impact is a method called Family-Educator Learning Accelerators (or FELAs). FELAs are 5-to-10-week cycles during which families and educators team up to help kids reach learning goals. When educators and families collaborate, the results are extraordinary. In districts that struggle to get 20% of parents to attend report card conferences, Springboard Collaborative’s weekly family workshops average 88% attendance. For every hour that a teacher leads a workshop, parents deliver 25 hours of tutoring at home. As a result, students average 4-5 months of reading gain during each program cycle, closing the gap to grade level by half in just five or ten weeks.

Children perform better in school when their families are interested in their education. Children perform better in school when they have good attendance. Children perform better in school when their caregivers talk to their teachers and advocate for their needs. Children perform better in school when their caregivers read with them at home. And yet, such involvement is often a challenge for parents and caregivers who are juggling multiple jobs and navigating language and cultural barriers. So, here's to the donors committed to helping schools and families overcome those barriers, which is critical to the pandemic learning-loss puzzle. #Education #Literacy #StudentSuccess #FamilyEngagement

Want to know how this district achieved such remarkable reading gains? Keep reading. ⬇️ This district followed our FELA steps to achieve success with their pilot: Step 1: Built Their Team. Before the program began, teachers participated in professional development to learn the FELA framework, which includes developing family engagement strategies, conducting successful family workshops, and collecting student assessment data. Steps 2 & 3: Gained a Baseline Assessment and Set Goals When the program started, teachers assessed each student’s reading level using the DIBELS reading assessment. They then grouped children with similar reading levels for small group instruction and developed at-home reading practice targets with families. Step 4: Practice, Practice, Practice Each week during the program, students practiced reading with their teacher and during small group instruction. Family workshops were held to teach families reading strategies to help them purposefully read with their child. Outside of school hours, students and families read independently and together, applying the skills they learned in the workshops. Step 5: Conducted Progress Assessments Teachers measured students’ reading progress using the DIBELS reading assessment* to measure growth in reading fluency. Step 6: Celebrated Achievements At the end of the program, teachers hosted a celebration to recognize the students’ hard work and achievements. #Education #Literacy #K12Education
