Case Study: How a large district increased Nonsense Word Fluency by 6.8 months during one summer program

With more than 300,000 students and over 630 schools, this Springboard Collaborative partner is the largest school district (“District”) in its state. Serving a diverse student population where 83% of students are BIPOC, 70.7% of students are also economically disadvantaged. Like all large districts, they also have limited resources and teacher/staff capacity to run their ambitious programs.

A Challenge with Reading

With a high percentage of their students falling behind grade-level benchmarks on their state assessment of reading, the District faced a significant challenge. In 2019, they launched a new strategy to address this issue.

Part of that strategy was to improve access to educational programs and to engage families, with the desired outcome of having 65% of their 2nd-grade students reading at or above grade level.

Using Summer to Improve Reading Skills

To achieve their goals, the district partnered with Springboard Collaborative in the summer of 2023 to pilot a 5-week literacy program using SBC’s Family Educator Learning Accelerator model (FELA).

The pilot was implemented across 15 public schools and served ~ 400 pre-K through 4th-grade students.
