Energy News Network highlights Solstice as a community solar provider using AI and machine learning to transform community solar services. 38 Degrees North Director of Asset Management, Samuel Van Dam, joined the conversation to share their experience with customer churn stating that AI is “a fantastic idea," noting that “There’s a lot to getting everyone signed up and making sure they keep paying their bills if they are replaced. When they have to be replaced, that potentially costs money and potentially results in lost revenue. Avoiding that is the preferred approach.” Predicting subscriber churn, implementing customer intervention on high-risk accounts, and enhancing overall equity - Solstice is changing the way community solar subscriptions are managed, for the better. Discover how innovative tools are changing the game.

About us
The age of solar has arrived. With prices falling by 80% in less than a decade, solar power is now within reach of every American household. Here’s the problem: 90 million American households are currently locked out of the solar marketplace. Maybe it’s because they rent their homes. Or other solar companies are not willing to sell to them. Or simply because their roof is in the shade or is not well-suited to a solar array. Our mission is to unlock the possibility of solar power for these households. With the help of transformative policies taking root in the United States, we are now in a position to do so. It's called "community solar." What it means is that a household can buy solar power without having an array installed on its roof. Here's what we noticed: in communities all across the country, there are extraordinary organizations -- from the church down the street to the college campus across town -- that are embracing clean energy and want to bring it to their constituents. There are also households that want to go solar but do not have an easy way to do so. Finally, there are solar companies eager to find more customers. Our goal as Solstice is to use community solar to help these groups meet one another. When we do, everybody wins: those who cannot currently access solar are brought into the market, more solar is deployed, and everyone saves on their electricity bills.

Coal mining created deep bonds of community and culture, fostering pride, companionship, and even art amidst its dangers. But as we transition to clean energy, can wind turbines and solar panels inspire the same sense of identity and unity? As coal fades into history, the question arises: Can new energy industries cultivate a similar community spirit? The challenge is to retain the camaraderie and pride once found in the mines while building new traditions around clean energy. From offshore wind farms to community energy projects, the goal is a future where industry supports and unites people in new, sustainable ways. This UK based article from BBC breaks down the challenges and sentiments of the above.

The U.S. is about to complete its first solar-covered canal project on tribal lands in Arizona! This innovative project, led by Tectonicus, harnesses the power of solar energy while protecting our precious water resources. By covering canals with solar panels, we're reducing evaporation, preventing algae growth, and generating clean energy for the Pima and Maricopa tribes. This project is a game-changer for sustainable energy and could pave the way for more solar canals across the U.S. #CleanEnergy #SolarPower #Sustainability #Innovation #RenewableEnergy #GreenFuture

Community solar is changing the game! A new study confirms what many of us in the industry already know - that community solar programs are making renewable energy accessible to more people, especially those in rentals and multifamily buildings. 🔍 Community solar adopters are 6.1 times more likely to live in multifamily buildings and are 4.4 times more likely to rent. Read more about how community solar is delivering on its promise to make clean energy more assessable.

What does AI have to say about community solar churn? Solstice has been using AI to determine churn on its community solar projects. Steph Speirs, co-founder and former CEO, shared some findings at Aurora Solar's Empower event last month: ➤Tenure - strongest predictive variable. The longer it is, the less likely the subscriber will leave. ➤ First two months – most sensitive timeframe for churn as subscribers check that promises are kept and whether the billing is understandable ➤ Consolidated billing – lower churn than dual billing since savings are easier to see. ➤ Credit size – The higher the credit, the lower the churn. Therefore, owners of less energy-efficient buildings are more likely to stay. ➤➤ Lower-income subscribers – not correlated with higher churn as a whole ➤ Higher-income subscribers – weak positive but statistically significant higher churn, less likely to need every dollar of savings ➤ Renter - more likely, weak positive but statistically significant higher churn. Watch closer and make sure they have a good experience. The finding about lower-income subscribers is a nice surprise. People have assumed they are automatically the most likely subscribers to churn. I suspect the lower-than-expected churn rate owes itself to them needing every dollar of savings and living in less energy-efficient homes. I hope developers use this new risk understanding to increase the percentage of low-income households instead of shying away from them. Recent regulations and other incentives have pushed it to 10% in the U.S. #communitysolar
