Our white paper, written in collaboration with Ørsted and Venterra Group, was released two weeks ago! Rediscover “The Wind, Wings, Fins, and Shells: Innovations to Support Biodiversity in Offshore Wind" today. To level-set: The offshore wind industry is experiencing rapid growth, with a 15% increase in 2023 and 7.7GW of new off-take contracts awarded in the U.S. alone. It’s enticing, but not simple. Startups in OSW navigate a slew of challenges beyond refining their emerging technology, namely a complex regulatory environment, stakeholder conflict, and data operability… Our paper is a guide offering actionable insights to avoid getting stuck on the latter challenges. Startups are uniquely positioned to challenge the status quo in offshore wind. They need the support of investors and stakeholders to get there. We always trust our friends at Venture Café Providence to host a fantastic event - Thursday was no exception! We are grateful for our partnership with CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center) that unites stakeholder communities in #climatetech time and time again. Thank you to our event partner Ocean Tech Hub of Southeastern New England for sharing your vision and effort in building up the ocean innovation ecosystem. We enjoyed an engaging discussion with Daniela Fairchild, Lisa Carnevale, and Rich Overmoyer at the helm. Special thanks to our partners on the Mass CEC team who tuned in virtually from Cambridge. Later in the evening, we were honored to moderate the panel “Diversifying Rhode Island’s Bluetech Community” featuring speakers at the forefront of DEIJA initiatives: Nina Pande, Nishita Roy-Pope, MBA, and Pete Rumsey. Our panelists offered their insights into solving awareness challenges in bluetech, the K-12 timeline to target underrepresented students, and lessening barriers to entrepreneurship in the Ocean State. We learned a great deal from our panelists, and were thrilled to connect with old friends and new partners. Until next time, Providence! 🌊

We are thrilled to announce the release of "The Wind, Wings, Fins, and Shells: Innovations to Support Biodiversity in Offshore Wind", a white paper in collaboration with Ørsted and Venterra Group investigating the startup landscape striving for a net-positive-for-nature offshore wind industry. Offshore wind will be a crucial part of the clean energy transition. Greg Watson, an interviewee for the piece, notes: "The reality is that there is no entirely benign energy source. So, we need to anticipate impacts and mitigate them". Through the analysis of our database of >2,000 startups, we dive into how innovations can mitigate harm to and restore these offshore environments, as well as the challenges startups are met with in attempting to do so. See below for access to the paper and registration for the corresponding online roundtable discussion! How do we help our startups reach a broader audience, customer base, and knowledge platform? By tapping into resources across the New England bluetech ecosystem. With 400+ miles of coastline and a historic blue economy, the Ocean State offers a thriving blue innovation network. SeaAhead’s roots are planted in Rhode Island, where the company was born, and we continue to engage and source startups from the state. In the past few years, made possible by our partners at URIRF, we have brought the BlueSwell cohorts to Rhode Island for an in-person week, allowing founders and program alumni to engage with partners and customers in the area. Whether on the shore of University of Rhode Island's Bay Campus or across the sound at Roger Williams University's labs, this is always a fruitful and inspiring time for the startups. We look forward to building on the connections we have across academia, research, business, and government in RI. Collaborating with stakeholders to foster growth, connection, and forward movement for ocean-based economies is a priority at SeaAhead. As a burgeoning hub for bluetech, we recognize Rhode Island’s demonstrated impact and future potential. If you’re a Rhode Island-based startup, investor, or just a curious individual, check out our website for more information on how to get involved with SeaAhead: https://www.sea-ahead.com/ BlueSwell is run in partnership by SeaAhead and the New England Aquarium. Applications close on June 25, so be sure to share this post or apply here: https://lnkd.in/ea9-BZx2
