"The MolinaCares Accord ("MolinaCares"), in collaboration with Molina Healthcare of New Mexico (“Molina”), has partnered with Project SEARCH to bring its employment training program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to Shiprock, a community of the Navajo Nation. Through the MolinaCares for Families initiative, Molina donated $20,000 to Project SEARCH in late 2022 to support the opening of a project site that will benefit the Native American youth population in the rural, majority Tribal area of the state." https://lnkd.in/gMTURswy
About us
Project SEARCH was developed at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, a research environment that fosters visionary thinking and innovation. It all began in 1996, when Erin Riehle was Director of Cincinnati Children's Emergency Department. Erin felt that, because the hospital served individuals with developmental disabilities, it made sense that they should commit to hiring people in this group. She wondered if it would be possible to train people with developmental disabilities to fill some of the high-turnover, entry level positions in her department, which involved complex and systematic tasks such as stocking supply cabinets. As a starting point, Erin presented her ideas to Susie Rutkowski, then the special education director at Great Oaks Career Campuses. Erin and Susie formed a partnership that was instantaneous, and together they launched Project SEARCH. Since its inception, Project SEARCH has grown from a single program site at Cincinnati Children's to over 600 sites across the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Portugal, Iceland, New Zealand and Australia. Project SEARCH's primary objective is to secure competitive employment for people with disabilities.

I would have never imagined that a young man from the East Side of Detroit with an Unknown disability for 30 years would ultimately lead a discussion for corporate executives about creating a culture shift and expanding opportunities for individuals that often get overlooked because of their differences. This past Tuesday, I had an opportunity to sit in front of senior leadership to discuss the Project SEARCH program at Consumers Energy. Since bringing the program into the company in 2018, 39 students have graduate from the program and by May we expect to graduate 7 more, bringing out total to 46 students graduating. Of the 39 students that have graduated, 24 have gained employment. We have cases where some students leave the Project SEARCH early because they have obtained employment and give all the credit to Project SEARCH because it gave them the confidence to apply for the job. Bringing Project SEARCH to Consumers Energy has been a game changer. Helping students gain job skills for future employment and helping employees understand that a group of individuals that are often looked over can work in the workplace. The program has made an impact on the interns, the company, the community, and the employees involved and it all started with me taking the risk of going to a seminar We are the ONLY utility in the nation involved in the Project SEARCH Program, and we have a chance to set the standard in the industry.
