#FlashbackFriday – Today we go way back with a bit of visual history! Here is a bird’s-eye lithograph of #Oakland, 1893—the year the City took control of the Port. Bridges at Webster Street and Alice Street span the estuary, identified here as “Oakland Harbor.” This view shows the area 40 years before the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge were built. #oaklandhistory #porthistory #oaklandestuary #shippinghistory #portofoakland

Cleaner & Greener Possibilities. By moving towards a zero-emissions Port, we’re protecting our environment and air quality... And at the same time, we’re cultivating a resilient, dynamic economy that invests in a more prosperous and interconnected Oakland. We’ve already reduced diesel emissions by 86% over 2005 levels, and are updating our fleet of vehicles, cranes, and shore-to-ship power systems with renewable electric, fuel cell, and hybrid power sources. It’s proof that, at Everyone’s Port, the cleaner and greener possibilities benefit us all. https://lnkd.in/gehxM3pT

We are working towards the future! The Port of Oakland has initiated a port-wide project to upgrade our wharves. This project aims to replace 92 existing fenders with new, future-proof fenders capable of handling ships carrying up to 25,000 TEUs. Fenders act as shock absorbers, preventing direct contact between the vessel and the dock infrastructure. In addition to upgrading the fenders, we will replace 90 existing bollards with larger ones that can withstand 200 metric tons of force to accommodate the largest container ships. Bollards are the posts to which a ship’s rope may be secured. The Port will also install an additional 14 bollards capable of withstanding 300 metric tons of force. Berth 55 will be the first to be fully enhanced with these upgrades, scheduled for completion by July 8th, 2024. The overall project is expected to be completed in early 2025. #portofoakland #oaklandseaport #Infrastructure

#FlashbackFriday - Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon (shown here circa 1940) was built in the 1870s at the foot Webster Street in what is now #JackLondonSquare from the timbers of the abandoned stern-wheel paddle steamer Umatilla, which was used in the Canadian gold rush and on the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento River in the 1860s. In the 1870s, the remains were turned into a bunkhouse for men working the oyster beds in the Oakland Estuary. With $100 and the aid of a ship’s carpenter, Johnny Heinold turned the bunkhouse into a saloon which opened in summer 1884.
