    We should all aspire to one day be loved as much as so many people unconditionally LOVE Trader Joe’s. Think about this: There is an entire cottage industry of IG and TikTok influencers who promote “finds” at Trader Joe’s to millions of followers every week. The vast majority of these “discoveries” are knockoffs of some innovative CPG brand. Some of them are quite good, but almost none are “original” or innovative. None of these influencers actually work for TJs and they don’t need to spend ANY money on this viral marketing. Trader Joe’s has less than 25% as many SKUs as the average grocery store, so it is 4 times easier to “find” product there as it is anywhere else in the first place. It has gone so far, that TJs can release very ordinary LTO “mini cooler bags” and create national news With influencers fighting over each other to “review” them. 👉There are a lot of reasons why TJs got here, and it didn’t happen overnight. 👉One MAJOR reason is that they execute SEASONALITY and SCARCITY of SUPPLY very well with LTOs. This creates urgency and buzz that drives cusotmers into the stores and opens up “viral moments”. 👉Every retailer and emerging CPG brand should take note.     Starting the day off by digesting the news from Shauna Golden at Nosh.com that CPG innovation has fallen off a cliff by almost 50% in 2024. This is excellent news for innovative emerging brands. Seriously. The market doesn’t need 175 adaptogen brands (insert any other trend here) all piled into the same subcategories with the same attributes and price. That isn’t innovation, it is redundancy. This is the definition of innovation by Harvard Business School: “The process of combining knowledge to create new products, processes, or services that are original, relevant, and valued” What retail buyers absolutely NEED is differentiation in their assortment. If you are selling a product that is TRULY differentiated, and priced to market, there are consumers and buyers ready to buy it. If there is less competition now than last year, that is a good thing, since consumer demand didn’t go anywhere. What is it about your product that is actually “original, relevant, and valued”?     We’ve been doing some research into Color Theory at Pod Foods to help our brands with packaging design as they transition form DTC to retail shelves. Along the way there are all sorts of articles about “The Dress” which came up almost 10 years ago. Anyone who was anywhere near the internet in 2015 had a shared experience with this viral moment. The most interesting take from Vox is that this was the LAST time we as a nation had a singular shared experience…since then, we have fragmented into infinite parallel realities of targeted ads and algorithmic feeds. The key question here for CPG and grocery as a whole is “how do consumers perceive my product on shelf?” Almost exactly 50% of the 150M viewers thought “The Dress” was White, when it was actually Blue. That’s astonishing in its own right but think about what it means for your CPG product. the consumer looks at it on the shelf for 5 seconds if we’re lucky. There are 20,000+ SKUs in the average grocery store. If they might not even agree on what color something is, imagine how easy it is to miss attributes and differentiators. More consumers are used to shopping and living online, where it’s easier to be spoon-fed compelling reasons to buy a product. When they do go into a physical store, their “browsing skills” have atrophied just like GPS ruined our sense of direction and spellcheck ruined our syntax. The biggest reason why we see retailers rejecting product we present is packaging design. More than price, more than product quality, which are just table stakes. This is not a time for subtlety. We’re about to find out, because beginning in August we are officially launching our weekly “Pod Podcast”. (The name just rolls off the tongue) This will be a little bit different from what already exists: 👉ONE special guest emerging brand founder per week. Emerging brand founders are the Superheros of the industry, and every superhero has an “origin story”. 👉We are going to get to hear each founder’s story about how their brand came to be, and what makes it special. 👉ALL of this content will be available for FREE on our Vendor and Buyer dashboards. 👉NO Sponsors.     With all due respect to the Banh Mi, the Grilled Cheese, the Reuben, and the PB&J… I submit the Lobster Roll as the G.O.A.T sandwich. A great lobster roll is made from nothing but local knuckle and claw lobster, a light coating of Mayo and served on a toasted, buttered split top bun. This is debatable but I’m in favor of lining the bun with a romaine leaf and a handful of Cape Cod Potato Chips. This is the epitome of summer simplicity and it is impossible to improve upon perfection when this is executed properly. The taste of place is built right in. The best food, the best products, and the best marketing plans are the ones which are simply enough to stand on their own without any further explanation, and just dominate by delighting everyone who comes across them.
