Engagement is the foundation of learning and growth, for students, adults, and the school district as a whole. We will be successful when all students actively engage in their own learning, when adults engage in their professional community, and when the school district is consistently learning and growing to respond to the needs of children and schools. We must all engage and take collective responsibility for ensuring student success and wellbeing so that every child has a chance to rise. To create this engagement, our vision is to build a portfolio of great schools that empower students to achieve success in college, career and life through purposeful, supportive and meaningful learning experiences. In crafting those learning experiences, we must strive to engage the whole child - the academic learning, the social-emotional growth, and health that enable students and schools to rise. As we work, we hold tight to the values of collaboration, growth and innovation, and equity.

Yale University President Peter Salovey will highlight the key findings of the Yale and Slavery Research Project in a livestream at 4:00 today. The research project's full findings are published in a scholarly peer-reviewed book, which is accessible online to everyone. This forward-looking project aims to address systematic issues that echo in our nation's legacy of slavery. One such commitment includes increasing educational access for youth in the New Haven Community. New Haven Public Schools is partnering with Yale University, Southern Connecticut State University, and New Haven Promise to design and implement a new residency fellowship program. This program will provide funding to aspiring teachers, allowing them to attain a Master's in Teaching degree in exchange for a commitment of at least three years of service in the New Haven Public School system. The fellowship aims to place 100 teachers with master's degrees into our city's schools in five years once launched. Betty Whitfield, a #student in the #pathologists' assistant program at Quinnipiac University, and Anne Dichele, dean of the #School of #Education, spoke to Jane Caffrey of NBC Connecticut about a new program that is helping the New Haven Public Schools address its #teachershortage in #science. #Students from #Quinnipiac's School of #Health #Sciences are now teaching middle and high school science classes in The Elm City. If successful, the program may expand to include other subjects, including #mathematics and #Spanish.
