Do you know how to spot a phishing email? Phishing is a type of online scam that targets consumers by sending them an e-mail that appears to be from a well-known source – an internet service provider, a bank, or a mortgage company, for example. It asks the consumer to provide personal identifying information. Then a scammer uses the information to open new accounts or invade the consumer’s existing accounts. There are several tips that consumers can follow to avoid phishing scams, such as not responding to e-mails or pop-up messages that ask for personal or financial information. Clicking on any type of “verification” tab could install Malware, short for "malicious software," includes viruses and spyware that can steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud. If you're unclear about an email, reach out to your IT personalist for verification of if the email is legit. If one person on your team is affected, ALL team members within your organization can be affected too. Familiarize yourself with spotting and understanding how phishing attacks can happen to you and your small business.
