About us

Morris Animal Foundation is a global leader in supporting scientific research that advances veterinary medicine. Since our founding, we’ve invested nearly $160 million toward more than 3,000 studies that have improved the health and quality of life for dogs, cats, horses and wildlife around the world. These studies have led to better preventions, diagnostic tools, treatment protocols and even cures for what ails the world’s animals. Some of these breakthroughs have become industry gold standards and are used in every veterinary practice in the country.

We are honored to receive a generous match of $100,000 from our animal-loving friends at Petco Love and Blue Buffalo to support animal cancer research at our foundation. Now through June 30, all donations will be matched by these organizations to help us expand our research efforts to improve diagnostics, treatments and find cures to cancers affecting animals.   Petco Love and Blue Buffalo first partnered to raise funds supporting cancer research at Morris Animal Foundation in 2010 and have now donated more than $7 million toward this effort. We're funding two new studies focused on immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, a deadly blood disorder of dogs. One study will assess how the immune system goes wrong in dogs with IMHA, and the other will determine whether there are subtypes of IMHA and thus different prognoses and therapies. With support from dedicated animal lovers Allen and Barbara Dearry, we hope to make a significant difference in the understanding and treatment of this important but underfunded disease. From the first complete dog genome sequenced in 2004 to the thriving field of canine cognition and behavior studies today, our understanding of dogs has grown tremendously. Researchers have delved deep into the genetics of thousands of dogs, uncovering vital information about their health, behavior, and evolution. We're proud to contribute to this journey through the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, tracking over 3,000 good boys and girls to identify risk factors for cancer. These insights not only benefit our pets but also hold promise for human health research. As scientists continue to explore the intricate relationships between humans and their canine companions, we celebrate the ongoing discoveries that help us better understand and care for our furry friends. Thanks to The New York Times for including us in their coverage. https://lnkd.in/gjC8GbyU

Meet Dr. Matheus Moreno Passos Barbosa, who is working to improve treatments for dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma, the most common bone cancer of large and giant breed dogs. Osteosarcoma typically surfaces as a tumor on a dog’s leg. While removing the tumor with surgery can relieve pain and improve the dog’s quality of life, this cancer can rapidly grow and spread. Most dogs diagnosed with osteosarcoma will eventually die from this spreading of the disease. Currently, treatments for slowing the spread of the cancer rely solely on chemotherapy, which isn't very effective. That’s why new ways to effectively manage the spreading of osteosarcoma are desperately needed and our foundation is proud to fund this study. This critical work to help dogs with canine cancer is only possible with the support of people like you.
