🌟 One day in the life of Maykel in #Colombia 🇨🇴 Meet Maykel Gutiérrez Solano, coordinator of one of Malteser International Americas' focal point teams in Colombia. She leads the coordination of volunteers in the northern region of La Guajira and Magdalena, providing guidance to Venezuelan migrant communities on health and access to services such as education. Today the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and the Grand Hospitaller of the Sovereign #OrderofMalta, Fra’ Alessandro de Franciscis, entered #Gaza. Helen Hayford, Global Protection Advisor at Malteser International, recently gave a speech at the #UN Security Council, calling for increased humanitarian aid and protection of civilians in #Syria. Three out of every four people in Syria are in need of humanitarian aid, and more than half of the population suffers from hunger. With humanitarian aid on an all-time low, entire communities grapple for survival. Sustained humanitarian support is essential. But humanitarian actors also need to be able to do their jobs as conflict escalates once again. The increasing frequency of attacks in the past months, including airstrikes in densely populated areas, threatens the lives of civilians and humanitarian workers. "We strongly urge all parties and forces operating in Syria to recommit upholding international humanitarian law and safeguarding civilians. Immediate measures are needed to de-escalate violence, facilitate humanitarian access, and protect vulnerable populations," Helen Hayford emphasized in her speech. Malteser International is committed to delivering essential healthcare, emergency WASH services, and livelihood support, working closely with local and international NGOs. #Colombia: Ruth’s mental health journey In La Guajira, a region that has welcomed a large number of Venezuelan migrants, severe stress and depression, known as "Ulysses syndrome," are common among migrants. In 2021, Ruth found hope with Malteser International's mobile health brigade. Seeking help, she asked, 'Do you offer psychological consultation?' Since then, therapy sessions at the Mental Health Center in #Riohacha have been her lifeline. "I am grateful for all the help Malteser International has given me, for recognizing the importance of mental health and for getting me out of the dark hole I was in.” We’re glad we could support Ruth with her recovery. Through collaborative efforts, MI and Malteser International Americas continue to uplift communities. To ensure the well-being of vulnerable communities like the Wayuu, we offer free healthcare services as well as medication and nutritional supplements. Because we believe health is a fundamental human right, accessible to all, irrespective of borders.
