About us
At Knox County Schools we strive to provide those educational experiences that develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes students will need to be successful members of both our local and the larger global communities. We recognize the world is a changing and dynamic place, and our approach to providing education must constantly be reviewed and adapted to ensure we are providing our students the skills they will require to meet the challenges of tomorrow. In addition to providing sound elementary and middle level education, which includes grounding in the arts as well as basic core subjects, KCS also offers a secondary curriculum that provides opportunities for students in college preparation, the arts and a wide variety of vocational subject areas. Our school system is served by over 7,000 dedicated men and women who are committed to providing all of our children an exceptional education in a safe, secure and healthy environment. Parental involvement is also key to our success. We encourage parents to be involved in their school at all levels, and there are many very active parent organizations throughout the county that contribute immeasurably to the success of our schools.

Our 865 Academies initiative is preparing high school students for life after graduation, whether that means enrolling in college or trade school, enlisting in service to their country, or finding high-wage employment with an entrepreneurial mindset. As part of this initiative, Academy Coaches play a key role in bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace. As a former finance-industry professional who went on to become an educator, Kacy Helton is a perfect fit to help launch the Academies at Carter High School. This week, Superintendent Dr. Jon Rysewyk and district leaders were in Washington DC to receive the Secretary of Defense “Employer Support Freedom Award." KCS was one of 15 recipients to be recognized this year, and the award is the highest U.S. government honor to employers for support of National Guard and Reserve employees. Major Michael Hicks, of the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment, Tennessee Army National Guard, is a social studies teacher at Hardin Valley Academy, and nominated the district for the award. Service to our country is an important calling, and we will continue supporting Guard and Reserve employees in their dual role as educators and service members. Thank you to Major Hicks and to Employer Support of the Guard & Reserve (ESGR) for this recognition!
