Many thanks to Anne Pasmanick for hosting JVS's CEO Lisa Countryman-Quiroz on the Power Station podcast! Listen to the episode at the link below to hear Anne and Lisa discuss JVS's mission and vision for the future, our impact on California jobseekers, and how we're using workforce development to advance racial equity and economic mobility. http://bit.ly/4cp4w4f
"I often think that we are not really doing workforce development, we are doing human development. And it applies to jobseekers but maybe even more so to the employers we are partnering with. We are helping them to think differently and sometimes for the first time about what type of work environment they are creating." Do you know Lisa Countryman-Quiroz, the indefatigable champion of people seeking high-quality jobs, those that provide good incomes, benefits, mobility and dignity? As CEO of JVS - Bay Area, she and a robust team train and certify jobseekers, primarily women of color, for highly-skilled positions that propel them from earning $40,000 to over $100,000 after 5 years. She also works with employers who are willing to make critical attitudinal and systems changes, from how they source their talent to creating opportunities for staff to advance in their careers. Lisa and her team are constantly tracking shifts in the labor market and identifying which sectors and employers require trained, prepared and motivated jobseekers. This conversation was, for me, both eye-opening and extremely heartening. Lisa and JVS demonstrate what is possible when workforce development is approached holistically, without fear of risk-taking and innovation. As she says, JVS's North Star is generating racial equity and economic mobility through workforce development. Most importantly, Lisa sees first hand the 2nd generation impacts of this approach, the children who are seeing their parents study, graduate and prosper. Today, we proudly commemorate Juneteenth, a day marking the liberation of enslaved African Americans. As we celebrate the power and remarkable achievements of the Black community, we also recognize the persistent inequities that still exist and the urgent need to continue striving for true justice. In honor of Juneteenth, our office is closed today. We encourage everyone to use this day for reflection, education, celebration, and unity.
