Western Ohio’s first families from France began their journeys here in 1825, settling first in Stark County, then continuing shortly afterward to what was then Jacksonville in Darke County. By 1837, their number and influence had grown so much that they petitioned to change the town’s name to Versailles. This small, beautiful village located in west central Ohio has a population of around 2,700 and has kept the name Versailles to this day. #frenchamericanhistorymonth #frenchamerican #ohiohistory

To end the last day of Immigrant Heritage Month, let's celebrate a significant day for The Republic of the Congo. Today is Congolese Independence Day, the National Day of DR Congo, which marks independence from Belgium in June 1960. During the Brussels round table talks organized by the Belgian government, the Congolese stood up for their rights and demanded immediate independence. Despite the Belgian government's preference for a longer process, the Congolese representatives remained steadfast. Their unwavering determination led to the date for Congo's independence being set: June 30, 1960. Free elections for the government were scheduled for May. Take today to learn about Congolese culture and traditions. We wish the Congolese a happy Independence Day! #congoleseindependenceday #congoindependenceday

Here's a wonderful flashback! Global Cleveland had a fun time working with a class from a local Unitarian Universalist Church to share information on what naturalization means. We gave a small presentation in one of their Sunday classes, followed by a three-course explainer organized by their teachers on what immigration and citizenship are, and the reasons people come to the United States. All of this was capped with their visit to a Naturalization Ceremony. The students learned a lot and had fun, and the exposure they received was invaluable. This experience was a success, and we truly enjoyed our time with the students!

This particular president championed significant programs like Medicare. This president has also made strides in attacking racial discrimination by signing the historic Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The answer is C! President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the new bill known as The Immigration Nationality Act, ending the national origin quotas enacted in the 1920s, which favored some racial and ethnic groups over others. President Johnson called the old immigration system un-American and said this new bill would correct a "cruel and enduring wrong in the conduct of the American Nation." This significant bill opened up a world of possibilities for Immigrants and refugees alike, opening up a gateway to a more diverse America.
