Today, on World Youth Skills Day, Canada proudly supports the next global generation by helping them achieve their dreams!   Canada has partnered with Generation Unlimited and UNICEF to support the Green Rising program. This initiative invests in #SkillsRightNow to help youths turn their aspirations into reality.   Grace Garba, a teenager from Nigeria, has suffered from the effects of environmental destruction in her community of Urshelima. She experienced a natural disaster firsthand, when the roof of her family’s home was torn off. Her community is also facing biodiversity loss, impacting agriculture.   Through Green Rising, tree nurseries have been established in Urshelima. These trees will act as shields for the homes and help restore degraded land. The trees also produce fruit, which helps improve nutrition and generate income. With this, Grace urges everyone to plant trees rather than cutting them down.     Because of her experiences, she now aspires to one day become a lawyer to protect vulnerable individuals.

“I was looking for an opportunity to enter the job market and apply the knowledge I had acquired throughout high school.”    Meet Mireya, a young Brazilian woman passionate about engineering.    Through 1 Milhão de Oportunidades (One Million Opportunities, 1MiO), an initiative from UNICEF Brasil and Generation Unlimited, Mireya not only completed a technical-vocational telecommunications course but went on to secure a job interview. She now works in a role monitoring satellite links and supporting technicians.    1MiO is an innovative multi-sector partnership that aims to create a million opportunities for vulnerable teenagers and young people aged 14 to 24 to access quality education or training in transferable, digital and entrepreneurial skills as well as job-specific skills. Through the support of strategic partners like Silatech, young people unlock access to employment and economic opportunities that help them become economically active and socially engaged citizens in their communities.    Today, Mireya is pursuing her dream of becoming an engineer while honing skills in telecommunications, problem-solving and communications.    When we invest in #SkillsRightNow we are transforming futures for young people and shaping a better future for all.    #YouthSkillsDay

When Aluwaine was young he did his homework by candlelight. Now he’s changing things for the next generation by turning over 2,000 plastic bottles and 12,000 LED chips and turning them into lights. He has partnered with seven schools, providing lanterns and training sessions on electronics, waste management, and renewable energy.
