Cultivating excellent mental health among academics worldwide

About us

We are a globally operating non-profit organization, formed by academics for academics. Made up of a wide range of scientists, researchers and students from all over the world, we have come to realize how common our struggles are in the academic environment and that aspects of academia itself unnecessarily contribute to and sustain unhealthy conditions. We love our academic pursuits, and we want to take care of ourselves and enjoy our lives at the same time. We have formed this consortium, powered by volunteers operating with a horizontal hierarchy, to bring together academics from all over the world to support each other and create lasting and systemic change.

  • Every small donation counts!  A donation to our programs to help provide access to mental health resources not provided by a University or Institution, because breaking the stigma can’t wait.  Donate today: https://lnkd.in/g_Ye3h2Z #GradSchool #PostDoc #PostDoctoral #Faculty #PhDChat #AcademicMentalHealthMatters #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealth #HigherEducation #Charity #NonProfit #NonProfitFundraiser #CharityFundraiser

Excited for a week of totally unplugged family vacation. A week ago I presented three hours on trainee and faculty mental health at the NIH Biomedical Training Program Directors Conference in DC and the biggest prevention and treatment for burnout is taking breaks…real, long, truly disconnected breaks. Time to practice what I preach! Dragonfly Mental Health will be there when I get back.

  • Our Founder and CEO is going to be leading a 3 hour workshop for the Nation’s top research training program directors tomorrow. The entire first day of their three day conference is dedicated to cultivating excellent mental health among academics! This is an incredible testament to how culture and times are changing. Excellent science requires excellent mental health, and that must be thoughtfully and intentionally protected and cultivated. We’re proud to collaborate with Dr. Neda Gould from The Johns Hopkins University, a leading expert in developing evidence-based, faculty-focused mindfulness based stress reduction programs. We’ll let you know how it goes!

On my way to DC to lead a fully customized 3 hour workshop for the 2024 NIH Biomedical Training Program Directors Conference. It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to support a new cultural, systematic and intentional approach to focus on trainee and faculty mental health.

Calling all Dragonflies!!!!! October 10th is World Mental Health Day and this year we want to do something BIG!  Dragonfly Mental Health is launching a DRAGONFLY GLOBAL MIGRATION!  What does that mean? Well, glad you asked! We want to deliver as many mental health literacy and skills training programs in as many places around the world as we possibly can in a single day in celebration of World Mental Health Day!  We have our top 5 most popular to choose from: - Mental Health Literacy Talk (1 hour) - Basics of Burnout (1 hour) - Imposter Phenomenon (1 hour) - Active Listening (2 hours) - Managing Upwards (2 hours) How can you help? Glad you asked again! YOU can help by offering to organize a program. It could be at your current or past institution, at your current place of employment, or associated with an academic association you associate with!  In person or online, able to pay or not, ALL possibilities are options as we are going to make a concerted effort to have ALL of our ambassadors deployed for this event and our fundraising department raising money to cover the costs (and hopefully more)!  If you are willing to help (even if you aren't sure its possible, please express interest), please complete this short form to let us know who you are and what you are thinking we could do:  https://lnkd.in/er5idCnm THANK YOU FOR HELPING US MAKE THIS A REALITY!

  • When was the last time you had a room full of academics agree on something? Yeah...it's rare, but we've clearly been doing something right at Dragonfly Mental Health because academics agree!

    ●     Academics are a tough crowd ●     Academics hate having their time wasted ●     Academics are notoriously ruthless in their skepticism and stingy in their endorsements (rightly so!) ●     I would know…I’m an academic myself 👩🎓 ●     Yet, out of 595 responses about our programs, 96% of them said they’d recommend us to others ●     We’ve gotten fabulous feedback. What they loved about it. What worked. ●     And what didn’t…Ok, fine sometimes it’s a little crass (thanks, Reviewer #3), but still constructive ●     We then incorporate that and update things so we’re constantly improving what we’re delivering ●     So 96% is not just enriched for people who said “yes. I loved it. It was so great” ●     Honestly, it was more likely enriched in the other direction. And STILL 96% of academics would recommend us to others ●     When’s the last time you saw academics agree on anything at that level?   ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~   👋 I’m Wendy Ingram, CEO + Founder of Dragonfly Mental Health. I graduated with a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology, but these days I focus my research on finding the most effective ways to support academics to achieve excellent mental health and function at their very best.   💜 Our team of academic volunteers focuses on delivering evidence-based workshops, programs and consulting to academic communities around the world – in a way that helps them actually feel seen and understood. 🎓 Interested in helping? Please donate (https://lnkd.in/eUh_jqJD) or volunteer (https://lnkd.in/e2wEZAH8)!

🤝 Dragonfly Mental Health meets SciLead 🤝 📢 #Communication strategies as a basis for practising leadership and their influence on mental well-being 📢 Finding the right words in challenging personal or team-related situations is a skill that requires awareness and practice and can consciously or unconsciously impact our personal and work relationships. Here are some insights into communication strategies to foster healthy communication and through that well-being: 1. Practice #ActiveListening: active listening encompasses presence, curiosity and acknowledgment as understanding. Be present - give people space to talk without interruption. Be curious - ask open-ended questions and practice sympathy or empathy when listening. Show people your understanding through acknowledgment. 2. Practice #NonviolentCommunication (NVC). Here are four important steps practiced in nonviolent communication: 1. Share your observations without judgement. 2. Take responsibility for your feelings. 3. Define your needs based on your feelings. 4. Formulate your requests in a positive fashion. 3. Be #adaptive - respect each person’s preferences with regards to communication style, preferences in the times and frequencies to meet and respect everyone’s privacy and time. 4. Be #clear with yourself about what you want from the conversation and be willing to ask for what you want. 5. Be willing to #hear ‘yes’ and ‘no’. #PhD #LeadershipDevelopment #MentalHealthAwareness #AcademicMentalHealth #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek #StrongerTogether Images generated by Ilya Alexander Yacine with CoPilot AI.

🤝 Dragonfly Mental Health meets SciLead 🤝 ✨ The Art of Self-Leadership ✨ Before supporting others, supervisors need to take care of their own #mentalhealth. Here's how: 1. Self-awareness: Reflect on your own emotions, stressors, and triggers to understand your mental well-being. 2. Set boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to prevent burnout and maintain balance. 3. Practice self-care: Engage in activities that promote relaxation and rejuvenation, such as exercise, meditation, or hobbies. 4. Seek support: Lean on trusted friends, family members, or colleagues for emotional support and guidance. Don't hesitate to seek professional help from therapists if needed. #PhD #LeadershipDevelopment #MentalHealthAwareness #AcademicMentalHealth #EuropeanMentalHealthWeek #BetterTogether Images generated by Ilya Alexander Yacine with CoPilot AI.
