Direct Relief

Dengue, the mosquito-borne illness, is growing in range and case numbers. In response, Direct Relief, guided by health providers, has developed a dengue treatment kit. Each kit is designed to treat mild cases of dengue in 100 people, and includes mosquito repellents, oral rehydration salts, acetaminophen to control fever and aches, and thermometers.  Dozens of the kits have been shipped across the Americas to date, including 12 to organizations in Puerto Rico.  https://lnkd.in/ewVqG9HV

This week I'm in Ukraine for the first time with colleagues from Direct Relief and Balcony.io to implement phase 1 of a new project supported by Grand Challenges Canada on geo-messaging for humanitarian coordination, staff safety, and security. Ukraine is at a precarious moment right now and it's more important than ever to make sure they have the tools, resources, and knowledge to survive the next phases of this war and to thrive and rebuild afterwards.

Over a dozen wildfires are currently active in California, the largest of which is the Lake Fire in Santa Barbara County, which has burned over 36,000 acres. The fires come amid a record-setting heat wave, leaving vulnerable populations, especially those who are unhoused or that suffer from respiratory illnesses, exposed to potential complications due to these multiple factors. In addition to supporting local partners in the midst of the fires, Direct Relief set up multiple distribution points throughout Santa Barbara County to make over 1,000 3M-made N95 respirators available to the local community. https://lnkd.in/ex74CKsr

Eyeing the future: The first of two Scholarship Foundation strategic planning sessions took place today at Direct Relief. The gathering involved Foundation staff and Board members in addition to representatives from the consulting firm Branning Strategies. We accomplished much! Day two is tomorrow!

In addition to Beryl’s impacts in Texas, more than a dozen wildfires were burning across the state of California this week, including the Lake Fire, the largest blaze at more than 30,000 acres burned. In the wake of the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl in Texas, Direct Relief has mobilized a series of critical medical aid shipments to local healthcare organizations. These shipments, set to arrive in the coming days, include vital medications and supplies essential for treating chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes (including insulin), respiratory and allergy medications, antibiotics, personal protective equipment, and over-the-counter items like sunscreen, hygiene supplies, insect repellent, and pain relievers. https://lnkd.in/eT6unhmp

In the wake of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating trail through the Caribbean, a picture of the impact on health care facilities — and a sense of the overall need for support — is beginning to emerge. It’s a picture that includes clinics operating in the dark, relying on trucked-in water, or simply unable to open. Direct Relief is coordinating closely with partners in the region, including the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, PAHO, and government health ministries. The organization’s emergency response team is also participating in coordination meetings convened by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and PAHO. https://lnkd.in/dzWw6NJA
