Ending factory farming. Ending animal cruelty. 🐖🐄🐑🐓🐟
About us
Compassion in World Farming was founded in 1967 in England by a British farmer who became horrified by the development of intensive factory farming. Over 50 years ago he decided to make a difference and take a stand against this farming system. In his lifetime, Peter Roberts saw the demise of veal crates and gestation crates in the UK, and in Europe achieved recognition that animals are sentient beings and secured a ban on the barren battery cage and gestation crates for sows (except for the period up to four weeks into pregnancy). Compassion in World Farming is dedicated to reforming a broken food and farming system and introducing a more humane, fair, and sustainable one. Our US office is based in New York City and is headed up by our US Executive Director, Ben Williamson.

Helping Companies and Farmers Create a More Holistic Food System | Focus in Regenerative Agriculture, Animal Welfare, and Corporate Sustainability
🌱 Improving soil health yields unexpected farmer benefits 🌱 A new study from Dartmouth College finds that money alone does not explain farmers' interest in #RegenerativeAgriculture. Instead, many farmers view improving soil health as a way to improve their quality of life by reducing their dependence on agrochemical companies' products and advice. What stands out to me is the shift in mindset, placing value on new factors beyond just efficiency. Farmers who implemented #regenerative practices are now paying attention to interactions between different life forms - from soil microbes to songbirds - returning to their farms. Additionally, farmers are including non-monetary benefits as a return on investment with regenerative agriculture. This reminds me of Thomas Berry's reflection that the universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects. He writes, "The devastation of the planet can be seen as a direct consequence of the loss of this capacity for human presence to and reciprocity with the nonhuman world." Thinking differently about our relationship with the land and how we measure success are necessary first steps to restore our ecosystems. #SoilHealth #SustainableAgriculture #EnvironmentalScience #FoodSecurity #Innovation #ClimateAction #Farmers #Agriculture #Soil #Health https://lnkd.in/eaDPv7Np

Thank you to Patrick Kuklinski at Modern Farmer for contacting our Executive Director Ben Williamson Ⓥ 🌱 💚 for this op-ed and bringing attention to the inhumane practice of ventilation shutdown, which is the primary method used to euthanize birds infected with bird flu through an excruciating combination of asphyxiation and heatstroke. Ventilation shutdown should be banned. #birdflu #animalwelfare #modernfarmer https://lnkd.in/g3bWbTUc

📢 TAKE ACTION NOW📢 Freshly weaned calves from Hawai'i are being shipped alive across the Pacific Ocean in grueling transport journeys to be fattened for slaughter on the mainland. Up to 80 calves are crammed into double-decker shipping containers, enduring terrible conditions on barges for up to ten days, traveling over 2,500 miles. With no mandatory reporting on injuries or deaths, many suffer, and some even die from illnesses like pneumonia.😢 Over 30,000 calves face this ordeal each year. We can end their suffering by banning overseas exports of farmed animals and supporting local economies instead. Calves don't deserve this—sign now to support a ban on shipping farmed animals overseas for profit! Transitioning to regenerative farming practices is not only environmentally friendly, it's economically beneficial too. According to an article from the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, farmers stand to see significant increases in crop yields and profits with a return on investment ranging from 15-25%. This underscores the immense potential of sustainable agriculture in driving both productivity and profitability. Let's continue championing and investing in practices that benefit our planet and the bottom line. 🌾 #RegenerativeFarming #Sustainability #Agriculture #Crops #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeAgriculture #Regenerative

Today, June 14, is Ban Live Exports International Awareness Day. Every year, millions of farmed animals around the world are forced to endure journeys of hundreds, or even thousands, of miles, only to be slaughtered on arrival or be fattened, often in inhumane conditions. This video exposes the true horror of the trade. Like and share to spread the word that the world needs to #BanLiveExports.

This month, Tennessee became the 36th state to authorize the purchase of cage-free eggs for participants in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.🎉 Additionally, the state approved organic eggs, aiming to provide greater benefits to WIC participants, such as reducing consumer confusion, enhancing the dignity of participation, and bolstering resilience to market supply shocks.🥚 Read more about this news on our blog: https://bit.ly/4b09YJd #WIC #organic #eggs #egglayinghens #cagefreeeggs
