Broad consumer uptake requires companies to scale and reach price parity, but to finance this expensive process they need to have broad consumer uptake. So what’s the solution? In part 2 of Good Food Institute Europe's scale-up series, Carlotte Lucas explores target market selection for alternative protein startups as they scale, highlighting the importance of finding the right market at every stage of growth, and the importance of being able to pivot if needs demand it. 📊 While public support for #alternativeproteins is growing, A Global Innovation Needs Assessment found that governments must invest $10.1 billion in the sector on an annual basis to reap their full benefits, including 9.8 million jobs, $1 trillion in economic value, and bolstering climate, food security, and global health goals. That's a $9.8 billion funding gap. Though new announcements boosted prospects for future investment, the estimated $348 million spent in 2023 satisfied less than four percent of the total public funding need. 💸 iFAB Tech Hub has been awarded approximately $51 million to enhance biomanufacturing and precision fermentation capabilities in Central Illinois. Learn more → https://bit.ly/3LhlbKV Awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) in the form of an implementation grant, the funding will help position Central Illinois as a global leader in biomanufacturing and precision fermentation, supporting national security, economic growth, and job generation. The funding is part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Tech Hubs Program, a national initiative aimed at investing in and growing regional bioeconomies and workforce development in critical technologies across the country, and follows $680 million in funding announced earlier this year. “Central Illinois is uniquely positioned to lead the way in biomanufacturing, leveraging an ecosystem of industry leaders, innovative startups, world-class R&D, scalable infrastructure, abundant feedstock production, and robust transportation networks,” said iFAB leader Nicole Bateman, president of the Economic Development Corporation of Decatur & Macon County. It's truly energizing to see continued substantial public support for #alternativeproteins to foster vibrant regional bioeconomies in the Midwest. 👏

🔗 A new report released by Boston Consulting Group (BCG), GFI, and Synthesis Capital reveals striking parallels between the alternative protein and electric vehicle industries. Take a look 👉 https://on.bcg.com/4cVsx2x 🚙 💨 According to the report, increasing the share of #alternativeproteins to half the global protein market would have the equivalent environmental impact of taking half of gas-fueled cars off the road, as animal agriculture produces 15% to 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, compared with 10% for passenger road transportation. 💸 Despite being one of the most effective technologies we have to reduce the environmental impact of our global food system, alternative proteins received roughly $1.1 billion in government support in 2022 and 2023 compared with over $470 billion in funding for batteries and electric vehicles announced in 2022 and 2023. 💡 As GFI senior associate director of industry intelligence & initiatives Emma Ignaszewski notes: “Securing public funding—which has been instrumental for EV innovation—is critical for alternative proteins to scale and compete with conventional meat on taste and price. And competing on these drivers of consumer choice is the blueprint for alternative proteins to help decarbonize the food sector, just as electric vehicles can help decarbonize the transportation sector.” ✍️ In our latest Substack article, GFI business analyst Daniel Gertner digs into how and why alternative proteins should take a page out of the electric vehicle industry's playbook. Chicago-based startup Hydrosome Labs LLC is using ultra-fine bubbles to address capacity constraints and other challenges facing the field of fermentation-derived alternative proteins. The bubbles dramatically increase yield while lowering energy, input, and cost requirements. As the demand for fermentation capacity grows, the company says it wants to partner with companies in the alt protein space to help them "increase production within the current infrastructure that is available" and achieve their goals more efficiently. For more on the manufacturing capacity landscape and scaling strategies for fermentation-derived protein, check out our report from June 2023: https://bit.ly/3zsw8qx. This analysis by GFI and Integration Consulting describes the global fermentation-derived product manufacturing landscape and strategies to effectively scale manufacturing capabilities to support technology development and meet future demand.
