About us

We create experiences that connect people to art, ideas, and one another. At Carnegie Museum of Art, we believe creativity is a defining human characteristic to which everyone should have access. The museum collects, preserves, and presents artworks from around the world to inspire, sustain, and provoke discussion, and to engage and reflect multiple audiences. Carnegie Museum of Art is arguably the first museum of contemporary art in the United States, collecting the “Old Masters of tomorrow” since the inception of the Carnegie International in 1896. Today, the museum is one of the most dynamic major art institutions in America. Our collection of more than 30,000 objects features a broad spectrum of visual arts, including painting and sculpture; prints and drawings; photographs; architectural casts, renderings, and models; decorative arts and design; and film, video, and digital imagery. Through our programming, exhibitions, and publications, we frequently explore the role of art and artists in confronting key social issues of our time, combining and juxtaposing local and global perspectives. With our unique history and resources, we strive to become a leader in defining the role of art museums for the 21st century.

On the occasion of Beate Kuhn: Turn, the first US museum exhibition of the German artist’s work, Carnegie Museum of Art commissioned a translation of the essay, Beate Kuhn: Ceramics Between Painting and Sculpture   Originally published in 1989, this essay is based on conversations between scholar and art historian Dr. Sabine Runde and Kuhn, providing a fascinating glimpse into the memories and work of the artist.    Surfacing an important art-historical text like this one not only offers expanded context for the work on view in the galleries, but also provides English-speaking audiences access to new inspiration and knowledge.   Check it out below, and if you’re in Pittsburgh, be sure to experience the exhibition, on view through Dec. 1, 2024. #ArtHistory #Translation #Ceramics #Sculpture #Pittsburgh

When arts organizations come together, big things happen! We recently partnered with Pittsburgh CLO—a not-for-profit cultural organization dedicated to American musical theater—to create a truly unique and immersive experience for those attending this week’s performance of The Color Purple. When audience members enter Pittsburgh’s iconic Benedum Center for the Performing Arts lobby, they’re greeted by iconic photographs by Charles “Teenie” Harris. His evocative images of hope, love, and celebration beautifully mirror the powerful themes found within the musical. To expand upon this dynamic installation, last night before the show, Charlene Foggie-Barnett, our very own Charles “Teenie” Harris community archivist, spoke with CLO’s Executive Producer, Mark Fleischer (he/him/his), and University of Pittsburgh English Professor, Dr. LeTriece Calhoun, in front of a room full of audience members. They discussed the cultural impact of The Color Purple, as well as literary insights and cultural context. It was a rich discussion complete with compelling audience Q&A. Thanks to our friends at Pittsburgh CLO for their partnership and to all who came out to see The Color Purple! #Arts #NonProfits #Pittsburgh #PerformingArts
