Restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives
About us
Billion Oyster Project is a nonprofit restoring oyster reefs to New York Harbor through public education initiatives. Oyster reefs have the power to transform NY Harbor. They provide habitat for hundreds of marine species, filter water, and can help shield NYC shorelines from storm damage. Since its founding in 2014, Billion Oyster Project has reintroduced 122 million oysters, engaging 8,000+ students, 15,000+ volunteers, and 70+ NYC restaurant partners. The project’s hands-on science and restoration curriculum is taught at 70+ schools across the city. The Urban Assembly New York Harbor School, a maritime high-school located on Governors Island, is the flagship school of the Billion Oyster Project. Harbor School students contribute to Billion Oyster Project as part of their Career and Technical Education (CTE) experience—growing oysters, designing and building oyster reef structures, diving to monitor reefs, operating boats, performing marine biology research, and more. Thank you Erica – and the team at Baylander – for bringing oyster knowledge and hands-on learning experiences to West Harlem! 🦪🦪🦪 #communityscience at its finest! #oystermonitoring
Lovely Saturday volunteering outside NYC's Baylander, a decommissioned Naval boat now serving as a bar, restaurant and "steel beach" on the Hudson River at 125th St. Baylander hosts several of Billion Oyster Project's Oyster Research Stations (ORS's) - shoebox sized cages full of oysters suspended around NYC. As a BOP Ambassador, it's always fun to share the project's work with others and, here, passersby could see some really fabulous oysters thriving in the Hudson! So much new growth and biodiversity in these cages - big healthy clumps of oysters plus tons of crabs, worms, mussels and (really big) grass shrimp! No fish though, perhaps because the current was so strong (look at the angle on the ropes in the water!) The Baylander does BOP presentations twice a month on Saturdays. Next up - July 20th. Come check it out and stay for lunch onboard! Big shout out to Ira Gershenhorn, Scott Koen, and Paola Garcia - my partners in crime for the day. Wild oysters are growing on ReefCycle concrete in NY Harbor! This is a tidal wave of progress in validating our material for coastal restoration and resiliency efforts. Thank you Jennifer Zhu, Ph.D., Billion Oyster Project, and the OpenIDEO Climate Resiliency Challenge partners for your support and partnership as we imitate nature to grow material.
🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 We are thrilled to share an incredible milestone in our journey towards a climate resilient NYC coastline! In collaboration with our amazing partners at Billion Oyster Project and OpenIDEO, we retrieved bio-concrete samples from the New York Harbor that have successfully recruited wild oysters. 🌊🦪 This breakthrough signifies two major achievements: Healthy Marine Ecosystem: The presence of these wild oysters highlights the remarkable progress in the health of the harbor's ecosystem, thanks to the efforts of the Billion Oyster Project with volunteer citizen scientists in NYC. Success of Bio-Cement: Our bio-concrete has not only attracted oyster larvae but also withstood the harsh harbor environment for over a year, proving its durability and effectiveness. We are beyond excited about what this study means for the future of clean materials and low-emission coastal restoration. Below are pictures showcasing wild baby oysters attached and growing on Reef Cycle's bio-concrete samples. The white material you see around the shells is "spat," a natural glue produced by oysters to grow their reefs and shells. Our bio-concrete leverages enzymes to mimic this durable material, creating bio-compatible and resilient marine construction materials that can fortify our coastlines for generations to come. Together, we're building a brighter, more sustainable future for our coastlines! 🌍💚 #ClimateResiliency #MarineRestoration #PlantPower #ReefCycle #BillionOysterProject #CleanMaterials #BioConcrete #CoastalRestoration

Epic shots! Thanks for helping us out! ♻️💪🦪
Shuck yeah! Our amazing team in New York headed across the East River to Governor’s Island twice over the last month to volunteer with the Billion Oyster Project . The Billion Oyster Project is on a mission to restore oyster reefs in the New York Harbor. Because oysters are filter feeders, each one filters gallons of water daily, improving #waterquality, creating artificial reefs that help protect NYC’s shorelines from storm surges, and contributing to a healthier, more vibrant #ecosystem. During our visits, the MN8 groups had the opportunity to pool efforts for the cause. We had a great time getting our hands dirty together, learning more about the restoration effort and seeing the impact of our work firsthand. Thank you to the Billion Oyster Project for having us. We are honored to play a part in such a fantastic initiative!

If you like eating oysters, check out our latest feature on Thrillist's 'The Extra Mile'; a peek inside our partnership with Gramercy Tavern and over 70 other restaurants across NYC to recycle discarded shells and turn them into the foundation for new oyster reefs in our waterways. This brilliant series seeks to uncover the inner workings of the places we travel to and how your next trip can include more than a visit to the Statue of Liberty. Whether you're visiting NYC for the day or staying the month, getting involved with Billion Oyster Project is a great way to make a difference before you head home. Today, in honor of #Juneteenth, we want to thank everyone who spoke, and listened, at our River to River: Stories from the Stoop event this past Saturday – in partnership with LMCC. Here are a few moments from the event, which featured the voices of Vienna Carroll, Ben "Moody" Harney, New York Harbor School grad Courtney Knight, Cassandra Moody of the Sandy Ground Historical Society, and more. Billion Oyster Project will continue to lift Black voices and make space for understanding history, sharing stories, and increasing representation – especially in marine and maritime spaces.
