When we talk about ocean health, it's not only about what we take out, but also what we put back into the ocean, like CO2 from the atmosphere causing ocean acidification or brine rejected by desalination which can have detrimental impact to marine communities. AtmoCooling is passionate about finding better uses for desalination brine, like cooling cities, generating more clean energy, and growing crops to ensure food security. I'm looking forward to take part in the MENA Oceans summit and to chat with folks about how we can work together to ensure healthy oceans for future generations.

I was thrilled to sit down with Jeffrey Ward last week for his podcast "It's Not Rocket Science" 🚀 We talked about my half a decade of life at SpaceX, how I got there, and what I've been doing since then. My episode isn't out yet, but while you are waiting, check out some fantastic episodes from other SpaceX alumni. https://lnkd.in/d4n22e9v

⭐️ Meet Paul Mahacek, Co-founder and CEO of AtmoCooling! Together with Paul-Emmanuel Herve, they are working to transform coastal deserts into thriving hubs of agriculture, clean energy, and climate resilience. AtmoCooling’s patented technology replicates and supercharges natural atmospheric cooling to create large microclimates up to 15ºC cooler. After completing his undergraduate and graduate engineering degrees at Santa Clara University, Paul has worked as a Chief Research Engineer at Centre national de la recherche scientifique. He was then responsible for the avionics system of the Crew Dragon spacecraft at SpaceX, and was the Vice President of Engineering at OnePointOne, an indoor farming company delivering end-to-end robotic growing systems. ⚙️ Paul has had a ‘decidedly not conventional’ career path. His work has included environmental climate science in the Arctic and Antarctic and helping put people into space. From his two decades of engineering experience, Paul was certain of one thing: Developing new, scalable technologies to mitigate and adapt to climate change is the best legacy he can provide to future generations. He also shared why he decided to work with Marble and what he gained from this experience: “There are so many ways for startups to fail. The early support from Marble meant that we instantly had a team of experienced founders and technical staff helping us avoid pitfalls, quickly move through analysis, and choose the right tools to get us where we needed to go.” 🚀 AtmoCooling is currently operating its second field site to continue scaling up the technology. They just opened a new branch in the UAE and are seeking funding to add to their already fantastic team. Paul’s advice to other scientists thinking of taking a leap into entrepreneurship is: “Look into market needs. Then… build diverse teams, iterate quickly, embrace uncertainty, and persist with passion.”

VPD, or vapor pressure deficit, measures the difference between the amount of moisture in the air and the maximum amount of moisture it can hold at a specific temperature. In deserts, VPD tends to be very high because the air is typically hot and dry, leading to rapid water evaporation. Indoor farming operations closely monitor VPD because they can control temperature and humidity levels. However, traditional outdoor farming has had to contend with natural conditions. With geographic scale evaporative cooling from AtmoCooling, outdoor desert farming can now adjust VPD to better suit the needs of crops, offering improved growing conditions even in arid environments. 🌵🌱🌞 #climatetech #cleantech #climate #desertagriculture #desertliving

When a water droplet evaporates, it absorbs heat from its surroundings to gain the energy needed for the phase change from liquid to vapor. 🌡️ This heat is acquired from the environment surrounding the droplet, such as the air or any surfaces in contact with the water. 💧 As the water molecules gain energy, they move faster and eventually have enough energy to break free from the liquid surface and enter the air as vapor. 💨 This process cools the surrounding environment, making evaporation an essential mechanism for heat transfer and temperature regulation in nature. 🌿 #climatetech #cleantech #climate #desertagriculture #desertliving

💧 Seawater and brine may seem unusable, but they hold incredible potential! 💡 Unlike freshwater sources, they're not ideal for irrigation or drinking without extensive processing. And when seawater is desalinated - brine water is rejected from the system and must be disposed of. 🌊 Instead of letting that brine go to waste, we're turning it into opportunities for cooling and innovation.💧💨 #climatetech #cleantech #climate #desertagriculture #desertliving

Not all salty water is the same! The usability of a water source depends largely on its salt and mineral concentration. Here's a breakdown: Freshwater: This is water with very low concentrations of dissolved salts and minerals (<0.5%), typically found in lakes, rivers, and streams and it's great for drinking and irrigating crops. 🌊💧 Brackish water: It's slightly salty water with higher salinity levels than freshwater but lower than seawater. Brackish water is often found in estuaries, where rivers meet the sea, and can be a mix of freshwater and seawater. 🏞️🌊 Seawater: This is the salty water from the ocean, containing a higher concentration of dissolved salts and minerals (~3.5%). Seawater is too saline for most freshwater organisms to survive, but is a great home for marine organisms. 🌊🐟 Brine: Extremely salty water with a high concentration of dissolved salts, often a byproduct of processes like desalination or salt mining. It's too saline for most life forms to exist and is used in various industrial applications. 💧⚙️ #climatetech #cleantech #climate #desertagriculture #desertliving

Why does evaporating water make the air cooler? 💡 Here's a closer look: When water droplets transition from a liquid to a vapor, they absorb energy from their surroundings, primarily in the form of heat. This process draws heat from the surrounding air, which reduces the air temperature. As a result, evaporative cooling creates a cool and refreshing environment by harnessing the natural energy exchange that occurs during water evaporation. 💧💨
