The Safeguard Ballistic Missile Defense System completes two tests at the Kwajalein Missile Range, July 18, 1974. In test M2-46, the capability of the Missile Site Radar and its data processor to acquire, discriminate and track targets from an intercontinental ballistic missile were evaluated. This launch of a Minuteman ICBM from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, to the KMR was the first to include an unstable or tumbling reentry vehicle among the objects to be assessed and tracked, and the MSR performed successfully acquiring and tracking the targets. M2-46 was the 37th test in the second system that had begun in 1971, 34 of which were successful. That same day, the command conducted TRM-133 a subsystem test for the Spartan missile. This particular test focused upon the production motors and the improved motor cases. It also featured a stressing factor for the interceptor as the predicted target position was shifted several thousands of feet to assess its ability to reposition itself and achieve a suitable trajectory. All test objectives were achieved. #TBT

The Redstone Rocket announces, July 11, 1962, that the Zeus Test Stand, one of Marshall Space Flight Center’s two new static test stands, is nearing completion as instrumentation wiring has commenced. Described as “a 5,000 ton monolith of concrete and reinforced steel,” the test stand was reinforced with 328 tons of 2.25” steel bars and 4,900+ tons of poured concrete. A “massive structure” designed to hold “the raging force of heavy solid propellant motors” the thrust block measured 36-feet high with test pads on the north and south sides. These in turn measured 30 feet wide by 134 feet long and 10 feet thick, with steel bars extending down into the hill with pilings going another 15 feet. The design allowed motors to be tested vertically and horizontally. #TBT
