Professor William Kirby of Harvard University did such a great job outlining challenges of American higher education. I still vividly remember the conversation I had in Aspen Higher Education Forum. The panel includes Dr. Marvin Carr of Walmart, Marisa Conner of Kaiser Permanente, Beth Henderson of Microsoft, and Silas H. of The Just Trust.

I had the honor of joining Bridget Long Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and Sara Hebel co-founder and editor-in-chief of Open Campus, at the American Academy of Arts & Sciences Higher Education Forum this week. We had a robust and generative conversation around research, strategies, and boots-on-the-ground ideas to expand postsecondary opportunities for young people. It is exciting to be a part of the great momentum in creating pathways and processes that center student agency as a fundamental part of their success. Our future as a country is fully dependent upon their ability to realize their biggest dreams.

Michael G Bennett and I participated in the AI for Higher Education Panel moderated by Sisi Wei. It is wonderful to attend The Higher Education Forum organized by American Academy of Arts & Sciences and The Aspen Institute. I very much enjoyed meeting with so many wonderful inspiring leaders. I learned we have lots of challenges and opportunities facing the nation. Zoom will continue to partner with leaders in higher education to transform productivity for all of our students and faculty members. Also special kudos to David Oxtoby and American Academy staff for making this forum so educational and successful!

A few years ago, Wendy Fischman, Howard Gardner and Willaim Kirby decided to put together a volume on global changes in higher education for Daedalus - the renowned journal of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. They emphasized that it wasn't a traditional set of academic articles, but rather a collection of essays reflecting on these changes. I found this idea fascinating and am grateful for the invitation to join a company of great scholars and university leaders from around the world like Fernando Reimers, Marijk van der Wende, Stephen M. Kosslyn, Olga Zlatkin-Troitschanskaia, Carl Gombrich, and others. My doctoral student, Daria Platonova, and I decided to write an essay about the socialist model of higher education. We argue that in the current discussion of the competition between the so-called continental European, Anglo-American, and, in some cases, traditional Confucian models, we overlook the importance of state-driven public higher education, which has its roots in the socialist approach. America’s GDP and the Dow Jones Average are often indicators used to know if the economy is strong, but the reality on the ground is that American workers are dissatisfied. The American Academy of Arts & Sciences’ Commission on Reimagining Our Economy is engaged in the critical work of advancing an economy that puts people first. They’ve created the CORE Score, a new measurement of American wellbeing, to help explain the disconnect between traditional economic metrics and public sentiment. In a piece for The Wall Street Journal, Jonathan Cohen and Jacob Hacker explain why the CORE Score, which takes things like economic security, opportunity, health, and political voice into consideration, provides a more comprehensive assessment of the country’s economic wellbeing. Just as a good job is not simply about wages – but rather about flexibility, dignity, and opportunity – understanding Americans’ economic wellbeing requires looking beyond GDP. Using this broader assessment can give us a better handle on peoples’ actual day-to-day lives and, most importantly, what policies are needed to improve them.
