Last month, my colleagues and I released discussion drafts of two short documents. "The Missing Link" describes the role of advocacy, particularly civil society advocacy, in achieving equitable, sustainable and effective health systems and environments. "Four Steps to Public Health Advocacy Success" describes the reasoning and context behind the steps in Global Health Advocacy Incubator's Advocacy Action Guide. Drowning is preventable but unfortunately, deaths are increasing in the U.S. and around the world. Bloomberg Philanthropies is leading efforts to reduce deaths and we are proud to partner with them to save lives and raise awareness for this neglected issue in Bangladesh, Vietnam and Uganda. Rampant digital marketing of unhealthy food products is a pressing global concern. In June, the World Health Organization launched a new publication addressing this issue and organized a three-part webinar series. Our Legal Advisor for the Food and Nutrition program, Aura Guerrero, presented. Aura shared insights on deceptive digital marketing strategies used by ultra-processed food companies. From influencer marketing to user engagement tactics, these strategies target consumers, especially children. GHAI advocates for stricter regulations to protect public health. Rural communities in the U.S. have less access to healthcare, a fact that impacts quality of life and increases the likelihood of negative health outcomes. This compounds issues like opioid use disorder. Access to high-quality, reliable healthcare is critical in addressing our nation's overdose crisis.
