What Is AppSelector, and Is It Safe to Uninstall?

You can install it, but T-Mobile might put it back after an update

AppSelector is a T-Mobile feature that provides you with control over the apps that are installed on your phone during the initial startup process. You can safely uninstall AppSelector using the standard process for uninstalling Android apps, but T-Mobile can put it back on your phone through an update later.

What Is AppSelector?

AppSelector is an app that comes preinstalled on new T-Mobile phones. When you first set up your T-Mobile device or after factory resetting a T-Mobile device, AppSelector allows you to select and install other applications that you may find helpful.

It automatically suggests apps based on your phone usage, meaning you must agree to send usage data to the app developer for it to work.

This feature is helpful for users who don’t know what apps they need because it automatically suggests apps you may need based on phone usage and a questionnaire. It can cause issues on phones that don’t have a lot of storage, though; in some cases, it can install apps you don’t want.

If you prefer to research apps yourself and download them from the Google Play Store, then you’ll find that AppSelector isn’t necessary.

How Does AppSelector Work?

AppSelector installs automatically toward the end of the initial setup process of some T-Mobile devices. Based on phone usage and a questionnaire, it will suggest apps that you may find helpful. You then have the opportunity to install any of the recommended apps.

If you skip the AppSelector part of the installation process, your phone will provide a notification later on that will allow you to go back and select the apps you want. You can ignore the message, but it will come back later if you don’t go through with the app selection process.

AppSelector will also prompt you to select apps after some operating system updates and as part of the setup procedure if you factory reset your phone. The only way to avoid AppSelector is to uninstall it from your device.

Is AppSelector Safe to Uninstall?

Some users find AppSelector useful, but it isn’t necessary and is safe to uninstall. It is a T-Mobile app, though, and T-Mobile may put it back on your phone as part of a future update. If that happens, you can safely remove it again using the same process you used the first time.

Here’s how to uninstall AppSelector:

  1. Open Settings on your T-Mobile device.

  2. Select Apps or Apps & notification settings.

  3. Tap See all apps.

  4. Tap AppSelector.

Does Uninstalling AppSelector Remove Other Apps?

AppSelector will help you find and install apps, but it has nothing to do with managing apps after they have been installed. If you install apps through AppSelector and later uninstall AppSelector, the other apps will still be on your phone. You can manage and update those apps through the Google Play Store just like all your other apps, and you can uninstall them manually using the same method you used to uninstall AppSelector itself.
