How to Send Apple Pay Cash Using the Messages App

Once you've set up Apple Pay Cash, there are a few ways to send money to people. Maybe the most common way is by using the pre-installed iMessage app on iOS and watchOS devices. Here's what to do:

  1. Open the Messages app and start a message (it can be an existing message thread or a new one).

  2. Tap the Pay icon. (If it's not visible, tap the apps icon next to the message field).

The Messages' interface has been updated in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17's, so you might need to the + and then More if you don't see the Apple Cash menu item.

  3. Enter the amount you want to send. Do this by tapping the + or - buttons, or by tapping Show Keypad and entering the amount.

If the person you're trying to send money to can't use Apple Pay Cash (because they don't meet the requirements listed earlier in the article, for instance), a message will let you know.

  4. When you've ready, tap Pay.

If you have money in your Apple Cash account, it's used for Apple Pay Cash transfers by default. If you don't have enough money or enough to cover the payment, the debit card on file in Wallet is used. If you have more than one card, tap > to choose.

  5. Add a message if you'd like and send the message like a normal text message.

Need to cancel a payment? If the other person hasn't accepted it, go to Wallet -> Apple Pay Cash -> Latest Transactions -> the payment to cancel -> Cancel Payment.

How to Send Apple Pay Cash Using Siri

Siri can also help you send money using Apple Pay Cash. Just activate Siri and say something like "Send $50 to Joe" or "Apple Pay $50 to Joe for dinner" and follow the prompts.

How to Request Money with Apple Pay Cash

If someone owes you money, request it using Apple Pay Cash by following these steps:

  1. Open Messages and go to a conversation with that person or create a new one.

  2. Tap the Apple Pay Cash iMessage app to open it.

  3. Select the amount you want using the + and - buttons, or by tapping Show Keypad.

How to Accept Money with Apple Pay Cash

After someone sends you money, adding it to your account is simple. The first time you're sent money, you have seven days to accept it. After that, all payments are automatically accepted unless you change your payment acceptance settings.

To change those settings, follow these steps:

  1. Tap the Wallet app.

  2. Tap your Apple Pay Cash card.

  3. Tap the ... icon.

  4. In the Accepting Payments section, tap Manually Accept Payments.
