How to Turn On or Off Network Discovery in Windows 11

This article explains how to turn network discovery on or off in Windows 11. It also explains what network discovery is for and when you might want to use it (or not use it).

How to Toggle Network Discovery in Windows 11

Network discovery can be turned on and off in Settings.

1. Open Settings with the WIN+i shortcut or search for it from the taskbar.

2. Select Network & internet on the left side and then Advanced network settings on the right side.

   

3. Choose Advanced sharing settings.

   

4. Select the button next to Network discovery to turn it on or off.

   

What Is Windows 11 Network Discovery?

Network discovery has a limited function. Its purpose is simple: to let your computer find and be found by other devices on the network.

When you turn it on, you might see things like your router, a streaming device plugged into your TV, and other computers with network discovery turned on.

When to Turn Network Discovery On or Off

One reason to turn this feature on is if another computer on your network is sharing a printer or some files, and you want easy access from the Network folder in File Explorer. They must double-click your computer name to see all your shared files, folders, and printers.

You might want to turn off network discovery to remain somewhat hidden on the network.

For example, consider that your computer is configured to share a folder full of pictures you usually only want to share with your family. But now you've moved your laptop to a new network and don't want those people looking through your photos. Turning off network discovery makes sense here so it's not so easy to see your shared files.

Network Discovery and File Sharing

Network discovery and file sharing are two separate settings. You can have one turned on without the other.

If you attempt to browse the Network folder, but network discovery is off, you'll see this error message:

 Network discovery is turned off. Network computers and devices are not visible. Please turn on network discovery in Network and Sharing Center.

Notice the banner notification at the top of this folder in the screenshot above. You'll be asked to turn on network discovery and file sharing if you select it. If you do this, Windows 11 will start letting networked devices see your computer and easily access any of your shared files and printers.

Turn Off File and Printer Sharing While Discovery Is Turned On

Below is how to keep network discovery on but turn off file and printer sharing. Generally, file sharing should not be turned on when connected to public networks.

1. Open Settings.

2. Follow the same menu items as explained above: Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Advanced sharing settings.

3. Select the toggle next to File and printer sharing to turn it off.

   

   If you've been sharing items, disabling this does not undo those shares but instead just prevents other devices from accessing them. Use Computer Management to manage all your shared items easily.
