How to Get Star Fragments in Animal Crossing

Wish upon a star and get some goodies for crafting

One of the simplest pleasures in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is gathering with friends in the evening to watch the occasional meteor shower. While there is an aesthetic joy to watching these shooting stars, there is a functional purpose here.

Wishing on stars will get you star fragments in return, which are coveted materials in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Meeting Celeste

A starry-eyed owl named Celeste is a mainstay in the Animal Crossing series, and in New Horizons, she'll appear on your island on random days. Expect to see Celeste wandering about after 7 PM local time, and should she be present, a meteor shower will likely occur that night.

When you speak to Celeste for the first time in the game, she will give you a Star Wand. You will be able to use this wand to change outfits on the fly. She will offer you a recipe based on an astrological sign in her subsequent visits, depending on which zodiac season it is. You can only receive one recipe from Celeste a day.

These recipes will certainly include star fragments, so hopefully, a meteor shower will begin shortly after Celeste's appearance.

How to Wish on a Star

If the skies are clear enough, your island will be a prime spot for watching some shooting stars. Should you know for a fact that there will be a meteor shower that night, feel free to invite your friends over so they can benefit from it as well.

You and your Animal Crossing friends will want to stand somewhere on the island where you can clearly see the sky. Have your Villager face the camera and move the right control stick down to point the camera at the sky. Make sure you are not holding anything else in your hand.

During a meteor shower, you should hear twinkling noises. Once you see a shooting star, hit the A button, and your Villager will make a praying motion with their hands. The shooting star will glow and flare up as a result of your wish. Do this freely as you watch shooting stars fly by in the background, especially if more than one appears at the same time.

How to Find Star Fragments

After a fun night of stargazing, you'll probably go straight to bed. Upon morning in-game, you may find some pleasant surprises on the beach of your island. Star Fragments will be scattered randomly on the sand, depending on how many wishes you made the night prior.

These are yellow, round crystals that you can pick up. At least 20 can appear on your beaches if you made more than 20 wishes during the meteor shower. However, more star fragments may appear if you had guests on your island the night before who wished upon the shooting stars.

In addition to star fragments, you can also find rare and blue Large Star Fragments. There is also a small chance of finding Zodiac Star Fragments, with 12 possibly appearing on the beach depending on which zodiac season it is — they are all different colors.
