How to Change Your X (formerly Twitter) Password

Make a password that's more secure or easier to remember

  • On Twitter.com, go to More > Settings and Privacy > Change your password.
  • On the X (formerly Twitter) app, go to Settings and privacy > Account > Password.
  • To reset a forgotten password, select Forgot password? on the sign-in page.

You should update your X (formerly Twitter) credentials often to keep your account secure and safe from hackers. Here are several ways to change an X password.

How to Change Your X Password from Twitter.com

If you know your password and want to change it, sign in to your X account to make the change.

  1. Sign in to your X account using your current password.

  2. Select More in the left vertical panel.

  4. Under the Your Account heading, select Change your password.

  5. Enter your current password in the Current password text box.

  6. Enter the new password you want to use in the New password text box.

  7. Enter the new password a second time in the Confirm password text box.

  8. Select Save when you’re done.

  9. You may be asked to review applications that can access your account. Select Review applications to see the apps that require your new log in credentials.

To add even more security to your X account, set up two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication means that you'll use your X password to log in—plus one of the following: a security code, confirmation from another app, or a text message.

Change X Password From the X App

Changing your X password from the X mobile app is similar to changing it on the X website.

  1. Open the X app on your smart device.

  2. Tap your profile picture.

  3. Tap Settings and privacy near the bottom of the screen.

  4. Tap Account.

  5. Under the Login and security heading, tap Password.

  6. Enter your current password in the Current password text box.

  7. Enter the new password you want to use in the New password text box.

  8. Enter the new password a second time in the Confirm password text box.

  10. The next time you sign in to your X account, use the new password.

Change X Password From the X Mobile Website

When you want to change your X password using a web browser on your Android or iPhone, use the X mobile site. The steps to change your X password using the X mobile website are different than using the X website.

  1. Open your favorite mobile web browser.

  2. Go to the X mobile website.

  3. Sign in using your current password.

  4. Tap your profile image in the upper-left corner.

  5. Tap Settings and privacy.

  6. Tap Your account.

  9. Enter the new password you want to use in the New password text box.

  10. Enter the new password a second time in the Confirm password text box.

  12. Use your new password the next time you sign in to X.

Reset an X Password You've Lost or Forgotten

Passwords get lost and forgotten. When you can’t remember your X password, reset it.

X requires an email address or a phone number to reset a lost or forgotten password. Make sure you’ve added one or both to your account.

  1. Go to the X sign-in page.

  2. Select Forgot password?

  3. Enter your email address, phone number, or X username in the text box.

  4. Select Search. You’ll be asked to choose how to reset your password.

  5. Choose the method you want to use for the password reset. Depending on how your X account is set up, the reset code will be sent to either your phone number or email address.

  6. Select Continue. A message appears telling you to open your email or check your text messages.

  7. Open the email or text message, then select Reset password.

  8. Enter your new password in the Type your new password text box.

  9. Enter your new password a second time in the Type your new password one more time text box.

  11. Sign in to X with your username and new password.
