Amazon's 2023 Event Announcements

Amazon's 2023 Devices & Services Event was held on September 20, 2023. This hour-long event introduced brand-new products and upgrades to existing products.

An "even smarter, and more conversational Alexa" was unveiled at the event. It's powered by generative AI and is optimized for everything Alexa is best at: voice interactions, real-time information, entertainment, and smart home control. AI is also integrated into Fire TV so you can find something to watch using a regular, conversational-style tone.

Fire Max 11 Tablets in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Japan will soon be able to leverage Eye Gaze Mode to perform pre-set Alexa actions by just gazing at the tablet. This is designed specifically for people with speech or mobility disabilities. A simple glance is all it takes to trigger music streaming, smart home control, or calls.

Echo Show and Alexa mobile app users in the U.S., UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain will soon have access to real-time audio and video call translations. It will support English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and a few other languages.

Some other Alexa features mentioned at this event includes Alexa Emergency Assist ($5.99 per month) for hands-free urgent response and Smart Alerts, custom Routines for when your favorite team's game starts, calendar management via emails sent to Alexa, and a really cool AI artwork generator for Fire TV devices that uses just your voice.

The 2023 Amazon event also revealed that the company has partnered with Carrera for their new version of the Alexa-powered Echo Frames smart glasses, now in seven frame styles. They support up to six hours of media playback or 14 hours of moderate usage. There are multiple lens options, whether you want sunglasses, prescription lenses, or blue light lenses. These splash and scratch resistant glasses can also be charged wirelessly.

The Echo Show 8 has undergone a significant upgrade, designed to enhance the video call experience with its repositioned camera and new noise reduction capabilities. It boasts specialized audio processing technology for a more immersive sound experience and room adaptation technology that fine-tunes audio playback to match the room's acoustics. The inclusion of a smart home hub simplifies the control of all smart home devices from a single interface. The Echo Show 8 also introduces adaptive content, utilizing computer vision to adjust the home screen based on the viewer's proximity.

On the smart home front, Amazon introduced the Echo Hub to control all your smart home devices from a wall-mounted control panel. Map View is a new and easier way to manage your home from the Alexa app by mapping out your home. Another smart home addition is the eero Max 7, a Wi-Fi 7 mesh network system with 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

Also new this year is the Blink Sync Module Pro, a hub that's meant to be paired with the Blink Outdoor 4 to offer extended range. You can even store recordings offline with the all-new MicroSD slot built-in to the Sync Module Pro.

Another home security product up for grabs is a new Ring camera. The Ring Stick Up Cam Pro comes with 3D Motion Detection, Bird’s Eye Zones, and Bird’s Eye View.

The second-gen Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max were unveiled at this event. The former now supports Wi-Fi 6, and the Max model supports Wi-Fi 6E for nearly three times the bandwidth. The 4K Max also now comes with the Fire TV Ambient Experience so that when you're not streaming, you can view things like artwork, weather, and calendar events.

Speaking of the Fire TV experience, Amazon has added "Continue Watching," a feature that lets you easily resume what you were watching from exactly the place you stopped. They also introduced the 24-inch Fire TV Soundbar with support for DTS Virtual:X and Dolby Audio.
