Northern California women's professional soccer team dominates in two separate leagues
The Sacramento Region’s women’s pro soccer team, the California Storm, clinched the USL-W Northern California Championship on June 29, with a 5-0 victory.
Last season, the squad finished second in their inaugural season in the USL-W.
Besides being a member of the USL-W, the California Storm continues to be a member of the WPSL, where they have won four national titles.
But now the team has to split their squad to play in two professional leagues during one season.
Franchise founder and former head coach Jamie Levoy said that having to field two squads during the season gives more great players from our area a chance to get on the pitch.
"I think it's an advantage because we can reach more athletes in our community," Levoy said. "It gives more women an opportunity to play and to compete at a high level."
According to Levoy, 85% of her roster is made up of players from the Sacramento Region, including Sacramento Native Susie Long, who played at McClathy High School before heading to play for Harvard.
Long is one of many players on the roster who play in college during the fall. But in the summer, all the California Storm players come together as one.
"There's so many girls coming from everywhere and it's fantastic to be part of a group that's so cohesive even though we're coming from all over the country," Long said. "There's also such history with the team so being a part of it and its legacy and getting to compete and make history is fantastic."
After winning the USL-W Northern California Division, the team went on to win the WPSL Nor-Cal Division last night, earning themselves two league division titles in one year.
The Storm will play in the USL-W Western Conference playoff match on Friday at Davis Legacy Soccer Complex.
It will be a battle of the storms as the team faces the Colorado Storm. The game kicks off at 8 p.m.
