The Mercedes-Benz E-Class are executive cars made with various engine and body configurations, each designated by a model number. The E-Class took over from the W series in 1993, replacing the previous executive cars sold in the midsize segments. The "E" in E-Class originally stood for Einspritzmotor, the German term for fuel injection. The first-generation Mercedes E-Class appeared with the name in 1994 as a facelift of the W124 it was replacing. A sedan, coupe, convertible, and estate (long wheelbase) body style were offered. A sport version was also offered through limited production. The 1996 model year brought the second-generation of the E-Class, this time completely revamping the car and establishing it as a luxury mobile. Both sedan and wagon styles were offered and the car won Motor Trend's Car of the Year award in 1996.A third-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class came in 2003, evolving the previous generation forward as a more modern luxury car. Body styles included a four-door coupe, sedan, and wagon were available with various engine options. An AMG model of the E63 was offered as a short-run tuning version. The fourth-generation of the E-Class came in 2010. New body styling was much more modern and sporty, carrying the "Mercedes Swoop" in the bodywork. Engines were likewise updated with more modern technologies for fuel efficiency and power delivery. A coupe, convertible, and wagon body style was still available. The current-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class entered the market for the 2017 model year. Taking more subtle design cues from the larger S-Class flagships, the new E-Class carries a more curvy appearance. Major updates to engines and transmissions were also added along with self-piloting for highway driving. A sedan and station wagon are the only body styles.Mercedes-Benz models in the E-Class with the most common problems are the E320 models from 2000-2003, which can have braking issues and brittle console parts. Similarly, the E350 can have engine issues at high mileage, especially in the 2006-07 model years.
Test Drive Reviews
2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class marks the latest generation of the luxury car, having been completely revamped in its sedan and wagon formats. The coupe and convertible carry on with the previous generation's design for one more year.
Everything about the E-Class emphasizes the "class" in its name. Carrying on with the updates made to the larger S-Class' upgrades last year, the E-Class has a stunning exterior, opulent interior and the latest technologies Mercedes has to offer.
In the midsize luxury sedan market, it's hard to name another car as sophisticated as the new 2017 E-Class. Most of the changes add more contemporary, understated luxury and do away with the heavy arches and thick interior elements of the previous generation. Mercedes does this very well with the new E-Class.
Options for the car include three engine choices and body styles ranging from a convertible to a coupe, sedan and wagon. The E-Class seats up to five, depending on body style chosen.
