Jeep Grand Cherokee Overview

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was the first unibody construction sport utility in the Jeep line and one of the first Jeeps produced after Chrysler took over the company. Introduced in 1993, the Grand Cherokee is now in its fourth generation of production and is marked as one of the best sellers in the Jeep marque. The Grand Cherokee is most well known for its roomy midsize design and excellent offroad credibility. The first-generation of the Grand Cherokee was launched for the 1993 model year as a luxury SUV. A six-cylinder engine was standard (a V8 upgrade option was offered), as was a five-speed manual transmission and an optional four-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive was standard and four-wheel drive was optional. The manual transmission as discontinued in 1994 in North America. The second-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee entered the market in 1999 as a complete redesign of the SUV. The V8 engine options were completely replaced with newer, more modern designs. The six-cylinder also saw some changes to improve fuel economy and power output. A new automatic four-wheel drive option was also introduced. The third-generation Grand Cherokee came in 2005 with a new four-wheel drive system and a more luxurious, powerful design language for the bodywork. Chassis changes meant better on-road appeal and performance as well. Again, both six- and eight-cylinder engines were offered. In 2011, the fourth and current generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee was introduced. Styling changes were minimal compared to changes under the skin, but the new Grand Cherokee was a hit, having won several awards and recognitions for its luxury, on-road drive, and offroad prowess. It's also noted for its high safety scores and good fuel economy returns. Both a V6 and a V8 engine are offered in this Grand Cherokee as well as a large-displacement V8 for the sport model (SRT). Unfortunately, the new-generation Jeep Grand cherokee has been the subject of several safety recalls. One for fuel tank leaks after an accident and another for the transmission not staying in park, both serious concerns. The 2011 Grand Cherokee model is also often the subject of computer module complaints when it enters mid-mileage (50,000 or so on the odometer).

In terms of iconic Jeep models, the Wrangler would be on top. This would be followed by the Cherokee and then the Grand Cherokee. Introduced back in 1993, the Grand Cherokee has served as the brand's flagship and challenger to the world's best. The results of this have been mixed. The Grand Cherokee did quite a good job when it came to the rough stuff and featured some handsome looks. But the interior and powertrains left some people desiring more.

But two years ago, Jeep introduced a heavily revised Grand Cherokee lineup with major changes to the interior, powertrain, and overall refinement. Could it be that Jeep has finally a true challenger to the world's best?

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The midsize SUV segment is crowded and getting even more so, but the five-passenger 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee acquits itself nicely in the crop of SUVs aiming to satisfy wide-ranging consumer wants and needs. Sharing its components with the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, the current-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee (redesigned in 2011) comes naturally by its premium look and feel. Upgrades in performance, cabin quality and overall refinement are dramatic, but none of this detracts from the Grand Cherokee's off-road prowess.
