Are Truist Bank Bonuses Worth It?

Truist currently offers some of the best bank bonuses available, making this a good time to open an account if you're eligible.

Truist bank accounts are available to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

The One Checking account promotion—$400 for a $500 direct deposit and 15 debit card purchases—provides an outstanding 80% return on your deposit, although the purchase requirement means it takes a bit more work to get than some other offers. If you typically make debit card purchases anyway, this shouldn't be too much of a hassle. This offer is much better than the median return of about 18% among checking account bonuses we track, and the bonus amount is higher than the median of $300.

The business account offers above are not quite as good, but they're still well above average. Each one offers $400 in return for a $1,500 deposit, for a 26.7% return on deposit. Truist's offer here is many times better than the median return among business checking bonuses we track, which is just 4%.

Big banks BB&T and SunTrust merged in 2019 to create a new financial institution: Truist. It’s the eighth-largest bank in the county, with over 2,000 branches in 17 states and Washington, D.C.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Truist Bank Bonuses Taxable?

Yes, Truist bank bonuses are taxable just the same as if you’d earned that money as interest. Truist will report bonus payouts on a Form 1099-INT to you and the IRS at the end of the year.

  • Who Is Eligible for Truist Bank Bonuses?

If you’re a U.S. resident living within one of the states that Truist Bank operates in (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C.), you’re generally eligible for the bonus. You’ll also need to be a new customer, so you can’t have any other Truist bank accounts of the same type, or have had one that you recently closed.

  • Does Truist Offer Any Bonuses for Current Customers?

No. You’re only eligible for a bonus from Truist Bank if you’re opening a new bank account within the promotion type. For example, having an open checking account from the same bank will usually disqualify you from other checking account promotions, but you may qualify for a checking account bonus if you only have a Truist savings account.

  • How Do Truist Bank Bonuses Compare to Other Banks?

Truist’s bank bonuses are quite good. They’re relatively easy to get, and the payout is quick. That said, there usually are quite a few bank promotion offers available at any given time, so it’s worth checking these out too.
